Don't know if this is still true, but I once heard that Huntsville has more PhDs per capita than any other city in the world. My Dad, an engineer, says that if you're into R&D forget about Silicon Valley and Research Triangle Park, move to Huntsville.

They are scrapping the Ares program. Not cutting, completely SCRAPPING. That is NOT going to be pretty...
Anyone else heard anything about Ares?

It will just be that... rumor.
The decision by the Augustine commission is not finalized until end of September'09. After that, it will go to the White House and gets another "decision", then onto NASA HQ Constellation Program, then flow down any decisions as to the future of Ares. Any major program direction change will likely be sometime next summer as result.
Having say all that, I agree the future of Ares I is not looking good. As I said in earlier post, this administration will be compelled to change whatever directions left over from the previous administration. It's a simple reason of politics. Ares I was a "left over" decision from the previous administration by the other political party.
So that was a "given". The remaining question is what will NASA do moving forward?

I don't know if this is related:
Lockheed Martin to cut 800 jobs at space systems unit, primarily in Denver and Sunnyvale, Calif
It's a good thing 20,000 BRAC jobs are on their way to Huntsville to rescue the layed off Ares workers. I sure hope there will be enough houses available for them when they get here. Otherwise the demand for housing will push Huntsville real estate prices off the charts. "a panel of President Barack Obama's space advisers all but canceled Ares I and maybe even scuttled the whole moon-Mars program."
from
floridatoday.com | The Flame Trench | Florida Today's Space Team Blog
and "Without a significant increase in funding – unlikely with the federal deficit approaching $1.3tn – Nasa will almost certainly have to scrap the next-generation Ares I rocket that has already cost more than $9bn to develop."

Is Ares NASA run only or do subcontractors also work on Ares?

Boeing is the production contractor on the Upper Stage, as well as the contractor for Instrument Unit (a "slice" of ring above the upper stage that houses avionic equipment). Boeing employees are local here in Huntsville.
ATK is the prime contractor on the First Stage, Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne is the prime contractor on the Upper Stage engine (J-2X).
In addition, there are many "support contractor" firms that provide people to support NASA on the design activity including, Teledyne Brown Engineering, Jacobs Technologies, SAIC, Miltec, and so on.
Lockheed Martin provides support contract on IT & computers.
Overall, 7,000 people works at MSFC. Ares is currently the biggest project at MSFC.
