"Members know that the defense buildup has topped out and that program cuts are coming. That means job cuts, too, in an economy already hemorrhaging jobs," Krepinevich said. "Given what's on the line for member constituencies, they are going to contest programs they believe the Defense Department has failed to manage properly."
Guess where the two reps who are trying to contest the budget cuts (in the article) are from ......

Me too. I think optimism about Huntsville's future is good, but I also hope everyone around here is building up their emergency savings and refining resumes just in case.

In the bigger picture, it may be more like a re-prioritization and spending shuffle than severe cuts. The bad news is that the job mix will likely change.
Gates to Propose lots of spending additions as well
Obama's defense spending is likely to be larger than Bush's

Among other things, Gates will speak about the fledgling, multibillion-dollar U.S. missile defense shield, Whitman said.
Gates is widely expected to cut or delay some programs designed for conventional wars in exchange for boosting intelligence, surveillance, communications and reconnaissance programs that are designed to thwart insurgents in places like Iraq and Afghanistan.
The $10-billion-a-year missile shield, the Pentagon's costliest arms development project, was thrown into sharp focus by North Korea's rocket launch on Sunday.
Lockheed Martin Corp, Boeing Co and Northrop Grumman Corp -- respectively the Pentagon's three biggest suppliers by sales -- each have big stakes in elements of the layered anti-missile shield.

The Missile Defense is a big part of work going on with BRAC & numerous jobs here in Huntsville. This will have a big impact for this area, depending on the outcome.

I have seen military base closures wipe out a whole town and bring down the local economy for years. Any thoughts?

I am concerned, but I work in New York. We have took a lot of hits from BRAC in the 90's, and have been up for another look twice since. When a base or a military organization closes down, the local ecomony DOES take a big hit. The base where I started working for the governement closed in 1995, and my town still hasn't recovered.

For sure depending on the outcome, Huntsville could get hurt more than some other areas. I work in the FCS program myself so definitely interested in the details.
