It seems like there has been morw job growth then job losses, which is good for the area. When BRAC is done, Redstone Gateway, along with several job growths in the research park and other areas, will continue the growth. Then hopefully, BRAC will come again in 2014 or 2015, in which more jobs, hopefully, would be added. Yes! Huntsville has a great future without severe job losses.

Don't get greedy now! There is a very high probability of future BRAC rounds, especially as our budget woes grow. And, there is a possibility that Huntsville will LOSE OUT in future BRACs as the needs of the military change. What HSV needs to do is to try and diversify a bit instead of putting most of its eggs in one basket.

Our understaning is, 'most' of the DoD agencies in Huntsville are transitioning contractor to gov. positions. For example, a friend is on a local contract (not MDA) and they are transitioning all positions but about 5%-10%. So several hundred positions will no longer be contractor positions. This is effecting all positions and areas across the board on all DoD contracts.

Even the Huntsville Chamber sent out a letter to Washington last fall asking for a delay of the transitions (read it on their website). They mention the following agencies...
AMCOM, PEOs for Aviation and Missiles and Space, AMC, AMRDEC, MDA, SMDC and other DOD organizations

A friend sent me the link below on the in-sourcing.

Thanks!

This is not limited to MDA. It is a mandate from the Secretary of Defense across the entire defense department. This is old news, announced last spring:

"Among the most far-reaching changes he recommended were reducing the number of support service contractors from the current level of 39 percent of the workforce to the pre-2001 level of 26 percent and replacing them with full-time government employees.

"Our goal is to hire as many as 13,000 new civil servants in 2010 to replace contractors and up to 30,000 new civil servants in place of contractors over the next five years," Gates said.

Are most of the positions being "in-sourced" coming from support services positions? I would assume that's the case and BobWallace's post seems to agree.

Also, I've looked on USA Jobs and don't see many development-like (engineering, software engineering, etc) positions. Most of them are program management positions. Do they advertise the jobs they in-source or just bring the contractor currently doing the work into the position?

They are required to be advertised - no direct conversion of jobs is allowed. In reality, however, the requirements are often written so tightly that it is difficult for anyone but the incumbent to qualify.

EVERY metro area needs to do this. It's just good planning.
