"An estimated 10,000 federal and contractor jobs in North Alabama are connected with missile defense programs. THAAD is managed by the MDA in Washington, D.C., and executed by the THAAD Project Office in Huntsville. In addition to Lockheed Martin, the program involves Raytheon, BAE Systems, Pratt and Whitney Rocketdyne, Aerojet and other local companies."
Defense cuts plan stirs opposition - al.com
Of course, this first pass at the budget is not definitive at all in terms of the final product.

What programs can Huntsville fall back if these cuts damper its future?

"'a permanent increase of about 19,700 jobs is expected in 13 Alabama and Tennessee counties surrounding the arsenal. Along with projected population increases, the region could grow by a combined total of 33,000 jobs and 70,000 people, according to the growth coordination plan. "

Good information, Charles; if there are going to be cuts in MDA and missile defense, what jobs are coming as a result of BRAC? I thought BRAC was bringing MDA and missile defense jobs. Also if MDA and missile defense jobs may come as a result of BRAC, will these jobs be affected in the near future after BRAC dies out?

Good info - thanks for posting that. I guess I'm still a pessimist or overly cautious regarding mda job losses but that is good news.

BRAC jobs are coming to Huntsville.
Missile Defense budget may get cut (I think that was Gates's proposal(?); still has to go through Congress???)
So, Instead of 5000 jobs coming, maybe 4000 jobs are coming (or whatever numbers someone wants to use).
I'm not sure of the breakdown (what government agencies) as all I care about is jobs. If my agency cuts my funding then I'll walk across the street and hook up with someone else.
Regardless of what happens, I can't think of a better place to be right now and for the next year or two than Huntsville if you are an engineer with a degree and a clearance.

I have an anut who works at Lockheed and I was telling her about what y'all say about the cuts. She said that they aren't going to layoff people, instead they are going to reduce production and do other things so that they won't end up laying off people.
