I live in the Riverton area (between H'ville and New Market). This area is zoned for Buckhorn H.S. which is excellent and there elementary/middle schools are New Market, Riverton, Mt. Carmel ele and middle. All seem to have an excellent reputation. Most parents I know are pleased. Shopping includes Publix and a few small stores and a family dollar and dollar general, but most anything you want is less than twenty minutes away. In the north end of Huntsville the schools to stay away from are Johnson, Davis Hills, Lakewood (all Huntsville City) hazel Green high is ok but there are better. Also in the city system beware of Butler High and Stone Middle

This is an excellent site for info on Huntsville and after reading some of the posts we will probably change our minds a hundred times before we get down there.
Thanks to all that contribute.
Thanks for your help.

New Market is a great growth area...also check out Mt Carmel by the River. Gorgeous neighborhood and you cannot beat Mark Harris homes, such good quality.
As for Hazel Green, I have never been able to get there from 72 in less than 30 minutes, so it is a pretty good commute. Also, many people move out that way for "more house"...however in your price point you could buy a very nice house in a great neighborhood in Madison, Monrovia, SE, New Market, Hampton Cove...would be better investment-wise.

Hee haw... sounds like Texas !!

Well.. I've been here 3 months and I can honestly say that I have NOT seen trucks with rifles hanging in back window and/or flying the confederate flag. Then again, I've been 'hiding' in civilized neighborhood like Madison & Huntsville....

Fish fry? Oh I miss those! but where I'm from in California, a fish fry you'd get tuna, mahi mahi, yellowtail, halibut, wahoo, shark, or rockfish... and guys wearing t-shirt that say "women love me, fish fear me". Here... I'd suspect catfish, catfish, and more catfish....

Hazel Green is a bit far removed from Huntsville....it is a little "country".

I have not heard good things about the schools there. There is also very little in Hazel Green, as far as restaurants and shopping.

I did sell a house there to a very sweet retired couple who were moving from Chicago and wanted nothing to do with city life...they are completely at peace there!

Thanks for your input everybody it was very helpful. I think I will fly down and spend a couple of weeks. I have been reading this site for a couple of days now and am leaning toward the Madison area. My wife and I have until Aug and will be spending alot of time in AL. We must get into a house by then or at least rent one in the school district we want for our 14 year old.

Thank you all.

If you are uncertain of buying or where you want to live, definitely check out the rental market. The rental market here is very attractive right now - gobs of properties available, some at very reasonable prices.

There is one house we picked up a flyer for when we were shopping - gorgeous house in an ideal location for us, but WAY out of our purchase price range. Now it is up for rent with monthly rent about equal to what we are paying for mortgage/tax/etc.

Hey New Market people:

We closed. We're just NE of where Bell Factory is (or was).

Anyway, someone shoot me a direct message and tell me where the closest big-box stores are. You know like Wal-Mart or Lowes or Home Depot. Otherwise I'm going to be driving around looking. We won't have 'net at the house for a while.

Thanks in advance!

Haha, hee haw is about right ... and yes, it would be nothing but catfish (which I personally think tastes like solidified crap water.)
