Certified Nurse Midwives are not illegal in Alabama if they work with a Doctor in a hospital, but they are not yet legally allowed to attend home births. Not all midwives drive to TN, though.

Was looking for that story in the Huntsville Times about Alabama midwives and the home births done over the border in Ardmore, TN. Appears to be gone. Found reference to it here:
