And my main MLS search criteria is Madison city schools, of course as close as possible to CRP, but also willing to consider something farther out, obviously County Line is a muddy, jagged border, unlike US 72 which is a more straightforward approach (south of is MCS, north of is County).
Besides the school zoning aspect, and as I hear lower taxes, and now the Athens DMV office, is there anything in particular that you hate/love living in Limestone Cty.? - I for one would like to stay away from septic-

Hi there Friday (just the fact ma'm... get it, Friday?

)
Yes I live on west side off Countyline road so that means that I am in Limestone county but belongs to the City of Madison. The subdivision is on sewer (no septics) and belong to the Madison City School system. We are served by either the Heritage elementary school or the new Millcreek elementary. A 2nd high school in Madison is also planned on Countyline road next to Whitworth farm (by Mill road). This area of Madison, IMO, is ready for growth and the roads are built to accommodate as such.
It is really not far to CRP as one would think. Cutting across Madison during the rush hour is actually pretty easy, even on University (Hwy 72). Depending on where in CRP you are, you can go either from hwy 72 and come in from the north, or from Madison blvd (old hwy 20) and come in from the south, or take the 565 onto 255 and go in anywhere you'd like. Just about the only entrance I would not recommend is from Madison Pike, just too much local traffic, an elementary school, and narrow 2-lane roads.
We pick this end of Madison because of ease of commute and we do like the 5-lane countyline road. I commute to RSA and it takes me 15~20 minutes with virtually no traffic, the longest time is sometimes waiting to get in at the gate.
The utility situation is a bit confusing but once you set it up it's really no different. For example, my electric is with Athens utility, but H2O is with Madison Utility, so it's a matter of setting up 2 accounts. Our area is served by Knology cable, internet & phone. Driving to Athens is really not bad, 10~15 minutes going west on hwy 72, it's a pleasant drive.
There's something charming about dealing with a smaller utility company like the Athens Utility. For example, I had a question on my electric bill (they miss-read my meter) and I was brough to the supervisor of customer service office right away. He check the electric meter usuage trend and quickly conclude it's indeed suspicious, so he told me that he will order a new meter reading and promised to get back with me with the result as soon as possible. That was on a Friday. On the following Monday, he called me and said indeed they've made an error and will credit me the difference. Now that's customer service!

From an Utility company no less! I could never get that kind of face time and fast response back in Calfornia !
So far we've been very happy with our place. But we enjoy a bit of city sound & light. In fact, we probably won't like it if we're completely out in the country with complete darkness and complete silence. Just a warning, it is along the landing path to Huntsville airport (the actual path is ~ 1/2 mile east of countyline road). The landing noise has not been an issue for us but, depending how far south you are, it may or may not be a factor in your decision. Occassionally you'll see the C-5 doing the touch 'n go landing and they do fly a bit lower, and some folks maybe uncomfortable with it.
This area is flat, which is fine for us. Again, coming from a place with mud slide and earth quake, we're not too keen on hills & mountains

We also enjoy occassional shopping & dinning around Airport road & Jones Valley, as well as the malls in Madison, but not enough to base our housing decision on our occassional shopping & dinning frequency. The local publix, walmart, and home depot/lowes takes care most of our shopping. Lots of choices of restaurants along Madison Blvd as well as the University. Like others have said, you can get to any place in Huntsville in 20 minutes.
We enjoy living here. It has all the modern day convenience but still peaceful & quiet enough for us. The birds chirping wake us up in the morning and the night time the occassional sound of train whistle puts us asleep. My current challenge is digging holes to plant trees and shrubs. I'll be building 2 raised bed garden in the back soon to accommodate my tomato, bell pepper, and basil plants. Beware of these alabama clay soil as they will fight you inch-by-inch to any diggings and they are full of limestone rocks !
There's a wide range of houses and price range to choose in this area, from the Waterford ($900k+) to Ashbury ($140K+) all within 5 minutes driving distance. It's just a matter of finding what you like. DM me if you have more questions, will be happy to answer.
