I just drove by what I think was an old high school immediately east of the main library. Not sure if this is technically downtown. There was some sort of plaque stating something like that high school has been closed since 1969. It remains there, an eyesore, all boarded up. It's a bummer that building couldn't be used for something.
Here's the street view:

Heading further east on St. Clair street there a bunch of public housing buildings which I think are destined to be sold off. This is in the medical district.

So, those two might be good candidates for some sort of face lift.

I'm sorry for asking the same questions; I'm just not getting it! Why isn't Decatur' growth as good as Huntsville's?

*Snort.* They've been facelifting downtown Decatur since 1968. Hasn't worked yet. That's stimulus money down the drain.

That's in Huntsville. Not Decatur.

If youre not " getting it" its because you arent studying the demographics, dear.
Decatur is NEVER going to be the new Madison, Hampton Cove, etc etc etc.
That is like saying " I dont get it, why isnt Moulton/Somerville/Hartselle growing like Huntsville".?
Perhaps you should go on back to the Growth is great stop all your whining thread that you have going on. Just kiddin. You just dont get it.

It's really weird because Decatur is only a few miles from the fast growing areas; coming up I-65 towards Huntsville, there's really no signs of the growth from Huntsville (BRAC). In Morgan County, there is a billboard that says "Welcome BRAC," but is BRAC resulting in growth in Morgan County? Doesn't seem that way along I-65.

Only a small part of Decatur touches I-65. You can't judge just from looking from the interstate.

I just spent a week in Huntsville house hunting. We fell in love with a home in Decatur. The Oak Lea sub-division. I love the wooded lots. I also visited schools and was impressed even though ratings aren't excellent. Can anyone comment on living in Decatur? What's the inside scoop? Friendliness? Open to newcomers? Any comments on the differences between Cedar Ridge Middle and Austin High vs. Oak Park Middle and Decatur High? Thanks.
