Should Madison County's Tags Read 2 or 3 Instead of 47?
The top 3 Alabama tags are based on population rather than alphabetical order. However, things are changing. Madison County has outgrown Montgomery County by about 100,000; Shelby County, one of the fastest growing counties in Alabama, is, eventually, going to take Montgomery County's spot as Alabama's 4th largest county. Because Madison County has grown so much that it is now the 3rd largest most populous county, and since it may past Mobile County in the near future, should Madison County' s tags read 2 or 3 instead of 47?

In the spirit of the engineering community in Huntsville, how about converting 47 to hex and make it 2F?

Obviously, you aren't an engineer. Hex is a base 16 numbering system with digits from 0 through F. 47 in base 10 is equal to 2F in Hex aka base 16.

So you are saying that the tag should read 16?

Obviously you haven't seen that they are doing away with the county prefix.

Hey KE-
let's take the guesswork out of this and go straight to number 1 - that's where this great county of ours is heading, isn't it? Number one across the nation !!
P.S. Have you heard the news lately?
Raleigh and Houston topped as the fastest growing metros last year - How could they do this to Huntsville? Well, they could!! I can't wait for your next poll: When will Hsv/Madison surpass Raleigh? Post it quickly, before someone else steals your thunder
Raleigh-Cary is fastest growing metro area in U.S. :: WRAL.com (story also ran on NPR but I couldn't find the link)

When I was young there were no county numbers on plates in Alabama. In fact, here's the one I remember in particular circa 1978 or so: http://www.bamaplates.com/images/Gal...mples/1978.JPG. They listed the county name beneath the tag number in that blue band. That seemed to work fine. I don't know why they changed it although it's fun to play the "name that county game" while on road trips across the state.

I truely believe that Huntsville could earn the number 1 spot by the end of the next decade unless there is a big change in econimic activity in Jefferson and Mobile County. I wish they would do away with the numbers since it is completely off now and just list the counties at the bottom. If things remain the same I`m sorry to say if Madison County reached a population of 800,000 ,Jefferson - 730,000, Mobile-680,000, and Montgomery 500,000 around 2018 Madisn would still be 47 on tags. Mobile county is currently 400,000 + now and is twice the size of Madison in area and has that over crowded feeling already. So to have Madison number 1 even near a population of what we currently have now which is over 400,000 would be scary !! Good luck to you guys on the number 1 spot I pray and hope Madosin County infrastructure will be up to date around the number 1 spot time. ; )
