Actually, I disagree. There are some good things about Huntsville High, and overall it's probably a good school, but they don't have as many programs as GHS or BJHS.
I went to GHS, but I had friends that ended up at HHS after middle school. Most were about the same intelligence level and work ethic that I was, and once they got to HHS they were constantly bored (as in--not challenged). I (and most of my class) had to work our butts off to make decent grades at GHS though (which ended up making college a breeze).
Of course, I'm only speaking from personal experience, but I think that there is a distinct difference between the quality of HHS and GHS, and I don't think it has anything to do with a certain percentage of poor performing students. In other words, I think the accolades are there for other reasons than just an average of test scores.
I don't want to go too far off topic. So I will say this--I seriously doubt 75 families could bring down the entire school system. And as deesonic mentioned, I think property values should cause more worry than the schools.

If a commercial development was forcing them out, would they get anything other than a couple months notice?

Wow, didn't realize a single person making $37.5K/year can apply for public housing... wow, just... wow. (I make barely more than that and OWN a house, and have no problem paying all my bills on time...)

You know, I was a bit surprised by that figure myself. That's nearly $20/hr for someone who is working full time.
After reading that piece, I wouldn't have wanted to "apply" for public assistance if I were a resident of Stone Manor. Making application for things like that can come back to haunt you sometimes. That seems like such typical govt. to make everyone apply for the housing so you could be denied and then qualify for the relocation assistance (even if you knew in advance that you'd make too much money or had no desire to stay)

Kind of like the guy having MediCare pay for his nursing home care while he owns a $4.3 million dollar primary residence (no other countable assets or countable income) while the guy in the next bed over is spending down his (countable) life savings of $350K until he can qualify for MediCare.
Perfectly legal.

What really kills me is that this is such a thinly veiled attempt to disguise the fact that Huntsville wants the valuable land that those projects sit on for it's own commercial/residential development potential. Yep, there's big money to be made. The powers that be in this city don't give a $@&% about the poor/oppressed or minorities. It will be very interesting when it's all said and done and we finally see who is behind all this (developer names/companies and politicians and others who stand to gain power and lots of money). If it's so important to "de-concentrate" poverty then why would the Authority buy a 50 unit apartment complex (or any other complex) at all?
Hmmm...reminds me of the Downtown Rescue Mission purchase/relocation debacle.
