moving to huntsville
I am requesting for help under my newphew's name (a&m bulldog). First off, my name is George and I am moving to Huntsville from Tuscaloosa. I got a job at Research Park. I am interested in living in an apartment during the week and coming back to Tuscaloosa on weekends. I want to live in an apartment that is close to the park, but in a nice uncongested setting. I am looking in a price range below $500. Thanks for help in advance.

I found three apartments under $500 when limiting the search to NW Huntsville, SW Huntsville and Madison City Limits. I used valleymls.com.
Here are the results (not sure if this URL will carry).
ValleyMLS.com
but if it doesn't, go to property, category: rentals, price<$500, property type: apartment, and then putz around with locations.

There are several on Madison Pike in Huntsville and Madison. They are hit and miss as far as being "decent" places to live though. Some of the ones near Sherwood Park area are a little dicey, but not all of them.

Why Madison Pike? Because on a map it looks close to Research Park? If so, you may be overestimating the time required to get to work and hassle involved in driving to Research Park. (Of course if you plan on walking then I understand your concerns.)
If you are within five miles of Research Park and driving, you will be to work in like ten minutes max. I live 18 miles away and it takes me 23 minutes.

Why not ask KE to get you one of the H'ville apt guides? He could also drive around the area you want to live and check out apts for you.

I'm moving in a couple weeks as well and was looking for places in the same area along Madison Pike. From what I've seen there are 2 new apartment complexes on Madison Pike and Slaughter Rd. They're really nice but the price range is pretty high...somewhere in the range of $900 for a one bedroom. If you go a little further towards Madison there's a place that was called the Arbors of Madison..I think the name has changed though. I think they might be closer to your price range. I know there are some places along Madison Pike that are on the Huntsville side away from Research Park but am unsure what the price ranges may be...they seemed kinda run down and someone asked if I wanted to buy weed when I stopped at the conoco that was there....it's probibly not the nicest area.
But you get what you pay for and from what I've seen the average cost for a decent place in huntsville is around $700 a month. Good Luck!!

Well, was it good stuff?
I don't think that area is run down, Madison Pike and Slaughter.
One thing that may bug someone living west of Slaughter near Madison Pike is the traffic heading east into Research Park in the morning. It is a two lane road with an elementary school near by and the backup could be annoying.
There are plans to widen Madison Pike, but the widening will be performed east of Slaughter - this won't really do much for the Madison Pike traffic.

LOL...I didn't take him up on the offer. I think the western part of madison pike is nice it's the area east of research park thats seems pretty ghetto. The traffic along the pike during rush hours was terrible however I found that if I went north on Slaughter Rd. and took the CRP access off of Slaughter I was able to avoid it.

Avoid what?
Once you hit Slaughter eastbound on Madison Pike, the backup is gone. The backup is on eastbound Madison Pike on the west side of Slaughter.
