I'm in Central Florida right now...

I was just wondering how is the IT scene in Huntsville? Are there alot of opportunities for software professionals?

Also, about what are the salaries like...say for a mid level software guy, 50's, 60's?

I love Florida....but it's also very expensive here.

thanks!

Mid level is very generic. Can you give me some details? Thank you.

Maybe someone with a BS degree in a computer science related field (CS, CIS...), say 5-7 yrs. experience as mainly a developer with a specialized skill set (like mostly Java, or C#, something like that). Also, is Lockheed "king" up there for IT jobs, kind of like how Publix is down here?

thank you

I can't speak to salaries, but Adtran is a pretty big IT employer in Huntsville. I've heard a lot of nice things about how well they treat their employees. It might be worth a look.

Default Yes

There are many IT enterprises in Huntsville, from the multi-nationals (e.g., Lockheed-Martin, Boeing-McDonald Douglas, Raytheon, etc.) to the "Mom & Pops". Both NASA and the Army Aviation & Missile Command (AAMCOM) spin off many IT positions with these contractors/subcontractors via Systems Engineering & Technical Assistance (SETA) contracts. Bio-Tech is coming to town again in a big way with Jim Hudson's institute getting off the ground in the near future, which should spur even more jobs in IT support. The BRAC transfers, which are expected to come down with only 20 percent incumbent staffing, should generate additional IT demand. Having Toyota Manufacturing here doesn't hurt either. Hires are competitive, but the opportunities are here for IT professionals, including entry-level.

Huntsville's SMSA population has increased over 9 percent since the 2000 census--I'm beginning to understand the way the locals (all 16,000 of them) felt in the 1950s, when Huntsville's population went from 16K to 60K in ten years.

Awesome info, thanks.
