I have been trying to research the salary range for a C++ software engineer with 4 to 5 years of experience at one of the major contractors in Huntsville with not much luck. I was wondering if there might be any engineers on this forum who could help me out.
Thanks!

Unfortunately this is one area aerospace companies can not keep up the salary with the silicon valley for a good software engineer. In this industry, engineer is engineer, so the salary is fairly similar simply pending on years of experience.

If you are really good, go on consulting and you'll make much more money. There are more demand of your skills at these big management consulting companies.

OK, let's stimulate some conversations here.

Entry level engineer salary = $65K

Assuming 8% pay raise a year (he/she is very good at keeping boss happy ), at the end of 5th year, the salary should be $96K a year compounded annually.

$87K if it's 6% pay raise per year. (see how important corporate butt-kissing is?)

For those of us with 20+ years of experience, we have to ask ourselves the following question:

What went wrong?

I started out at $29K in 1986. I wonder what my starting salary would have been if I ever got a B or an A in a class...

In 22 years, that's a 3.7% average annual increase in starting salaries.

Liar...

You would be making $64.5K this year if that's the case. You would've been better off to go back to the college placement office and interview for entry level jobs every year and would still come out ahead.

Starting Salaries 1986 $29K
Starting Salaries 2008 $65K

$29K * (1.037)^22 ~ $65K

If you were a business major, I'd say a "C" grade is actually perfect!

You were busy with other extracurricular activities like social networking (drinking, partying, etc.) communicating (si habla espanol?) with street vendors, team building (sports), etc. Building marketing and management skill foundations.

But you were in engineering , did you say you design key missile defense systems? OMG, only if the Russians knew!! The berlin wall would've NEVER came down!

I am an engineer, therefore I am efficient. I would be very disappointed with a B or an A because that means I studied too hard - I would have been wasting time; you can pass with a C; a C meets requirements - it is sufficient. Just like a good requirement is necessary and sufficient.

If you're smart, you are building a bunker in your backyard too.
