I haven't had any trouble with the bees - the front of my house is a butterfly garden (Mondara in gardenese means bugs), which also means bee variety and red wasp haven - LOTS of them...I go right in amongst the bushes to weed or water. Insects buzz around but basically leave me be. Ah, she-human with water = good.
The trick is to ignore them, I guess. Teach the kids not to get too close or antagonise...
If I had many yellow jackets enjoying the oasis, that would be a problem. They seem to prefer the back deck. :I
Trumpet vine - you'll need to direct it by training, but yes, if the season is long enough...however, it'll probably die back every winter if it gets too cold. (My passiflora was happy green till our 9 degree night...then it went poof. Trumpet was gone very early in the game.) I do not know if it sprouts from old wood or new green each year, time to check Dave's Garden or some such. Mine came right from the ground after being cut back, old growth is dead.

Lot's of negative reviews for this stuff on Daves Garden. They say its hard to control... ours looks pretty well established but its entirely limited to the tree/bush its in (although it runs throughout the bush/tree). I would think if it were such a terror that it would be all throughout the treeline (?). This is a new house and new neighborhood, but these trees and bushes have been here for a very long time. My house sits on what used to be some kind of farm field, and backs to a treeline that separated two fields.

Wait a minute ---- trumpet creeper can't be that hard to control and anything that is good for the birds has my vote. NOW kudzu is hard to control and should be killed. BTW, you can buy trumpet creeper at the garden nursery. It does great too.

Well, it will be a little while before we build our fence.... until then I'm just going to watch it and see what it does. It doesn't look to be harming the tree.

It will take over if you don't keep it under control. I had a small vine 3 yrs ago and it has now taken over that spot and more. It multiplies like crazy. It does die off during winter.

What do you do to keep it under control? I read horror stories about it going under ground and popping up on the opposite side of someone's house!!

It's nowhere near as bad as Asian wisteria. I notice trumpet creeper in the tree tops sometimes, but I never see it in a whole stand of trees like wisteria or kudzu.

So glad you posted this. I've been wondering for, oh about 4 years what that flower was! Always wondered if it was just one of those "pretty" weeds or the real deal.
