Who do you data forumers think the chances of the huntsville area getting this company?
A report says an exiled Chinese tycoon plans to set up a factory in Alabama to make clean-tech cars.
The Reuters news service, reporting from Hong Kong, says Yang Rong, who fled China after being accused of economic crimes, intends to announce the project later this month. Yang, the former chairman of Brilliance China Automotive Holdings Ltd., now lives in California. Read the report.
The report says Yang's plans have the backing of former Vice President Al Gore, now a partner with a prominent California venture fund. Yang will seek financial support from the U.S. Department of Energy, which has a fund to assist environmentally friendly energy projects, Reuters said.
The project is expected to create thousands of jobs in its initial phase, a source told the news service.
"The Alabama government definitely welcomes the plan as the new firm, which owns big land in the state, will build a plant there and hire local workers," the source told Reuters.
Forbes ranked Yang as the third-richest man in China in 2001.

I'd hope that the state government would take advantage of this opportunity. These types of industries are the kinds of things that create a steady economy.

If it happens it probably be somewhere in the Birmingham area or Huntsville area since south alabama already has recently built plants and new plants in construction but who knows. I hope the black belt gets it.

Well, Birmingham and Huntsville probably have the inside track on this due to infrastructure and educated workforce. Add the fact that Birmingham is adding a new railhead and connecting I-22 to Memphis by the time the plant is built, and we're suddenly ground zero for auto manufacturing and parts production--particularly if GM and Chrysler continue their precipitous decline.

Sounds interesting. We need more jobs in this type of field -- clean energy, environmentallly friendly... yep! Hope it happens and succeeds.

There's already a "super site" that was set aside on U.S. 31 in Limestone County for the proposed VW plant that went to Chattanooga. The sign is still up.

Not to mention the empty Delphi plant with a new Auomotive Robot training center being built in the front yard of the old plant, and out of work auto workers needing jobs there.

Would be nice to know what that was all about before jumping on his bandwagon.

Or Ding Dong.
Meh, if he was exiled for ecomonic crimes he should fit in well with the politicians in this state.
