Default Alabama Workman's Comp Law

Does anyone have knowledge of AL workman's comp laws? How many employees should a company have before workman's comp insurance is required. What happens to an employer that isn't insured and has an employee with an on the job injury? Are these laws state or federal?

I have a friend who got hurt on the job. He just found out that his employer doesn't have workman's comp nor does he carry health insurance for his employees through his company. My friend is insured through his wife's employer. Will her insurance pay for the surgery he requires even though it is an on the job injury? Shouldn't the employer be liable for these costs?

I worked in insurance for three years... so I'm going to give your questions a shot. AL law states that if you have four or more employees (including officers) you must carry worker's compensation. His wife's health insurance should cover any injuries he has.

They were told today that her insurance would pay the medical bills, but they (the ins co) will then sue the employer, the employee, the customer, and anyone else whom they might get a buck from to offset the cost. This is the same as when you have an auto accident and your car ins should pay ER/medical bills rather than your health insurance.

This employer has many more employees that the number quoted by UAHgrad. Does anyone know how/if this type of information is regulated by the state/fed. What type of problems will this create for the employer? Any thoughts about whether my friend will lose his job?
