We are on city water and have recently noticed a nasty "dirt" smell and taste to our tap water. It doesn't look dirty at all, and we don't appear to have a water leak.

Is anyone else on the Huntsville system experiencing anything like this?

I haven't noticed it. Could be a really local thing, like at the neighborhood level.

Do you get the smell/taste from the filtered refrigerator water too?

Is it possible that you have a bad filter?

lol my wife and I think the water tastes terrible every time we move to a new city.

We literally cannot stomach the taste if the water isn't filtered nowadays.

Call the water department and ask for a test. Something doesn't sound right.

It's ok. Sometimes our tap water smells like the river or something. Ain't nothing but some southern minerals. God made dirt, and dirt don't hurt.

God also made man (although that is debatable), and man made the water treatment.

Hey, do you have one of those garbage disposal deals? Sometimes the smell from those things overwhelms the sense of taste when you drink water at the sink. I love to drink tap water. Those filters take out all the flavor!

There are several possible causes: the municipal water source is only one. You could have old pipes that have cracked or are letting in surface water, they could be corroding (if they aren't PVC), is it hot or cold water or both? A bad water heater element could make the water smell bad. It could be, like previous people said, a local problem with old pipes. Or it could be nothing. Best to have it checked out, and ease your mind.
