Oh, I forgot about that...it's the only Albertson's I've seen east of Colorado.

There's an Albertson's in Tuscaloosa. Never saw the one in Huntsville.

hey teach, IIRC, the Dwarf Restaurant was indeed on the southeast corner of the Governors Drive & Memorial Parkway. That's where the Ayers Farm Market is now. The Huntsville High School Boosters Club would treat the HHS football team to a fried chicken dinner after home games and the Dwarf really knew how to cook fried chicken. About all I can remember about it now.

skinem, the latest Star Market location at Bailey Cove & Weatherly was also an Albertsons in it's original incarnation, before becoming a Bruno's, then a Southern Family Market (a subsidiary of Bruno's), and now Star Market.

Thanks. If I ever knew that, I forgot all about it. (When you get a certain age, that sentence makes all the sense in the world.) I know you see Albertson's all over out west.

I've enjoyed this thread...it brings back a lot of memories.

Huntsville is changing so fast and has changed so fast that I find myself at times suddenly realizing that something I've driven by is new, or different, but can't remember what used to be there. Happened a lot this last week as I was in areas that I'm not often in...

Old restaurants and stores:

- Fogcutter on University; been there for decades, finally closed their doors five years or so ago.

- Daryl's on University; closed around the same time as Fogcutters

- Jackson's Restaurant in Madison; still open AFAIK, but they closed on Saturdays years ago, ending our Saturday morning breakfasts there, mores the pity.

- The old Mooresville country store; closed once I-565 was done and Hwy 20 was bypassed.

- Handy City, where the new county jail is now located.

- Cotton fields in Madison, replaced with subdivisions, strip malls and apartment buildings.

Eaten at all the above named places...I remember when the Fogcutter was the place to go.

Forgot all about Handy City!

For real country stores are becoming an endangered species in this area...

I've found it somewhat funny when I've heard people in some subdivisions complain about having problems with getting their yard to grow well or look good. It's kind of tough when the ground had been in cotton for decades--and it really drains the soil of nutrients...then the builder scraped the thin topsoil off prepping the site. Some of those subdivisions I'm surprised that they can grow anything besides rocks.

I remember when Madison Square opened and everyone thought it was so far out. Its a shame what has become of that mall - it used to be THE place to shop.

And I remember my grandparents driving from Fayetteville to shop at Montgomery Wards.

Great thread!!

Yup. You must remember then when Jordan Lane at University was pretty much the edge of town...

I remember that if you lived west of Jordan Lane you were considered to live in "the country!"
