Default Just a quick apology to Alabama!

I have to apologize! I admit that Alabama has been my go-to state for all kinds of jokes...I'm sure you've heard them all, no need to repeat. But I have to say, it's really great here. I think of everywhere I've lived, this is my favorite place. I love how kid-friendly it is. I love how friendly it is, period. I love how green it is, and how this area has so much technology-based businesses and recreational activities. So awesome!

So Alabama, I apologize for being an ignorant little sh*t. No more jokes from me!

VB--from one transplant to another...don't tell anybody. When people from home ask how you like Alabama, lie and tell them what a hellhole this state is, populated by uncultured, knuckle-dragging rednecks. Because the more complimentary a picture you paint, the more people will move here. And the things that make Alabama so cool will vanish.

friday13 will become famous soon enoughfriday13 will become famous soon enough
Back when I moved here, I used to announce "I'll be moving to AL" (kept it short and simple to evade other questions and having to get into details on personal level).
But contrary to what I thought I was accomplishing, people would go: "Whew, but why AL, what's in AL?". Other than the "rednecks live there", people were polite and not giving me other AL "jokes" (stereotypes).
It took me a while to figure out, so I changed my line: "Im moving to HSV, AL". That didn't work either, once AL entered their head, they stopped listening - so until I left for Hsv, I had this elaborate response about HSV being "different" from what they "knew" about AL at large (farmland, poverty, whatnot). I would've been fine just saying "AL", plain and simple, but they would insist with more questions and eyebrows and dismaying interjections.
Now, I simply say "AL", followed by a muffled, roll-eyed "whatever, you ignorant", depending whether the interlocutor is present or over the internet. No more wasting my time explaining.

Oh, and If I'm prejudiced against a place is for the wheather and/or economics (COL) (I wouldn't willingly move to FL, AK, MN etc.)

Now that you are a local, feel free to make fun. It is like family, it is OK to make fun of them if you are related.

Disclaimer though, you've got to keep it in the family, you don't make fun of your family to other people.

Good thread. I like Huntsville. Alabama still has to convince me... but I'm keeping an open mind.

I think Huntsville in particular is heading in the right direction. It truly is a good town for families. But can we please put some of these power lines (holy crap this town has a lot of 'em) below ground? Sure would be nice to be able to bicycle around town without being killed too... but maybe I'm asking too much!

It's funny that you mention that, because I've often thought the same thing.

I'm still getting to know Alabama myself, but there are a lot of very nice places around the state. Some of my favorite places that I've visited so far outside of HSV is Little River Canyon, Desoto State Park, Smith Lake, Sipsey Wilderness and the south suburbs of B'Ham (Mountain Brook, Hoover, Pelham...).
