Driving from Huntsville to Auburn
My friend, her dad and I are going to Auburn this Saturday to watch Auburn vs Kentucky. I know that U.S. 280 is the shortest way from Birmingham to Auburn. However, is it necessarily the best way to the stadium? Would it be better to take 65 all the way to Montgomery then I-85 to Auburn? Which way do you usually take to Auburn?
By the way, we will be driving back to Huntsville after the game. How is the strech of 280 late at night between Auburn and Birmingham? Is it safe?

IMO, 65 - 85 makes more sense. 280 is nowhere near as developed a road. Going to a game where there is going to be drinking, and then coming back after fans have done even more drinking, I want as much median between me and oncoming traffic as possible.

Actually, I'll split my answer. I think 280 is the better way going down, and 85/65 is the better route coming back.

280 this time of year can be dangerous. When I was a student at Auburn, I hit a 16 point buck on 280 (past Alex City) in the middle of nowhere. Needless to say, I never travelled 280 again at night! But, I knew alot of people who had the same experiences, hitting deers or near misses. That deer totaled my car, BTW, and the state trooper said we were very lucky, he has had people killed in wrecks involving large deer.
I have traveled from Bham both ways, for gameday traffic you are probably better to take 85. Traveling back at night, I would definately suggest going through Montgomery.

We preferred 280 both ways. We would always arrive about 4 or 5 hours before gametime, and stayed to feed the son and visit before returning. Going in via I-85, though, it seemed like we spent a lot of time sitting in slow traffic on the interstate.
But dear son hated 280 and always took the interstates.

Have made the trip many times on way to Florida and to Auburn. Our opinion is the interstates are the way to go. We went down a few weeks ago for the Auburn/Va Tech(?) game. 280 can be bumper to bumper and so slow with all those lights. By 65 - 85 it took us about 4 hours and my husband doesn't speed. And 280 through Birmingham and on south is awful. We have had our normal 14 hour trip down to Boca last an extra 1 or so just with 280. Quit doing it last fall.

280 has very little traffic on Saturday.
I prefer 280, but you need to watch your lead foot or you will join most of my friends that have gotten tickets. Police/troopers patrol that stretch of 280 heavily

John Deere tractors on the highway are NO JOKE!!! Take I65 south to Birmingham and take I20 west to Tuscaloosa. Much better time to be had in T'town. Roll Tide!!! Sorry...couldn't resist.
Seriously, I've taken 280 to Auburn. Other than the stretch in the B'ham area, I didn't think it was too bad after that.

I think you might be talking about West Virginia at Auburn.
