I think the costs associated with getting a test at least from the paper were very reasonable. We plan on doing that soon. I would appreciate a realtor telling me that the area is high in radon testing and that we need to get it done if we are concerned. Many of us moving from another area are not aware of the problem with it here.

Are the home radon test kits as reliable as a professional test?

Default Yes, radon issue in E. Limestone house

We walked away from a home we were going to buy in E. Limestone because of the radon test results among other concerns. Although the area itself isn't one of those more prone to high radon (e.g., nearly 50% of tests in Meridianville indicate levels over 4 pci/L), IIRC about 20% of homes test high there. That's still significant in my book.

Madison County Extension has the tests for $5 and you send it off for results. REasonable to me. The new guidelines state that anything above 2.7 is considered high. Very curious how this effects so many of us.

Would it be too difficult for a do it yourselfer like me to mitigate in a slab home?

Basically I need a jackhammer or something to get through the slab to the gravel. Then put a pipe up through the roof. I think I could do this if my test comes up bad.

Wonder what the homeowners did here all those years ago before all these tests came about? Like what about mold--that's the big money for people to cash in on, or damp crawl spaces--What did people do back in the old days, when many were in the house, and the people could see the steam/dew/water condensation pouring down their windows and into the ground? And the discoloration on their sidings? Did they all die from mold issues? Probably not.

One thing about mold. In the olden days (HAHA )homes were not as well insulated and were drafty. At least the ones I lived in. I had a house in the 70s that was old and on crawlspace. I could see between the floor boards down to the dirt! Those crawl spaces were also left open all the time. Too much moving air for mold I bet!

hahaha--probably so Mawoods. But the point being that what we are frightened of today is, at times, overblown hyped stuff to help people make money off of the fear.
