All of Alabama is not the same so when people ask questions about things in Alabama, Huntsville wouldn't be a good example. You're not really around Alabama people.

I should clarify - he can help the next customer in line by bagging their groceries instead of taking mine out to my car

WELL -----------I MISSED the friendliness and talking by the cashiers when I lived way up north or upper midwest. You could go all afternoon doing errands and not one person would smile or say thank you. When we traveled south to Auburn to see our daughter, it would be a different world. By the time we got out of Walmart in Auburn stocking up on stuff for her, the little lady behind the cash register had smiled and made us feel welcomed and I knew her life and she could know mine. Sorry I love it and I will take that anyday over a frown and not even a look up when you give over your money.
And we moved to Wisconsin from north Atlanta which isn't real world anyway. We noticed all the clunkers up there and because of weather, they were rusted out. Never would have seen that in too rich for its own good north Atlanta.
I am uncomfortable with the confederate flag but I do understand that there are those that are not racist but love it for different reasons. However, knowing that it is offensive I think southerners are more and more getting away from it. But I don't want to just do away with everything that makes us unique. So for those of you who don't like it down here, well---- just kidding!! I like every region being a little different.

A friendly "thank you I can take it from here" is all it takes. Let them do their job. I think I know the life stories of the regulars at Publix by now.
At home you get your groceries on the belt and you better be quick bagging them in your own bags before the queen of the register has a hissy-fit:>(

That's why I bag my own groceries every time I have a chance (when a bagger serves 2 registers). Power of European habit, and I don't mind at all. Oh wait, am I supposed to wait for the guy until he's done at the other register and hold off my line?. I don't think I can do that, manners or not, store policy or what, I need to get in and out of any store quickly (especially the register wait line)

This is why I do like to do the self-checkout at Kroger when I am in a hurry and only need one or two things. Very efficient.

This reminds me of the good old days when I was younger and had a job working in the drug store and these bored, unfulfilled housewives would come in and have "conversations" with me.....ooohhhhh yaaaaaah.

Sometimes... and other times they persist to the point of me going "Fine, you want to do it that bad, let's go." Of course that's when you get to hear their life stories
