By the 2010 Census, will Huntsville and Decatur metros finally merge? This probably would happen if Sweetwater gets built.

How far out does each metro go? I mean if you follow 565, there is nothing but gas stations and fireworks stands for a good stretch between Huntsville metro and Decatur metro.

Actually the city limits almost touch now. You'd be surprised how far they go out...thanks to the big land grab about 10 or 15 years ago.

But I don't think they'll ever merge.

Huntsville goes all the way to I65 at a certain point if I'm not mistaken. Huntsville is like an amoeba.

Wow i did not know Huntsville pretty much has swallowed the city of Madison. Huntsville is like an amoeba.

Based on the map http://www.hsvcity.com/GIS/gis_maps/pdfs/hsv_area.pdf (broken link)
Huntsville and Decatur touch at I-65 and 565 intersection. But there is still a whole lot of expanding to be done before the cities would really merge.

Why would they want to merge?

well i was not sure if the OP was meaning merge as become 1 city in name and everything. Or merge as in become so smooshed together that you cannot tell where one ends and the next begins. but still remain 2 separate cities.

Huntsville is actually larger than Atlanta.

It is way too large. There is no way that HSV can actually service the outer limits near I-65 w/ police and fire, etc., effectively.

When Huntsville annexes some area of land, do the people that own the land getting annexed have any say? For instance someone owns 100 acres of land that is being farmed for cotton or something. Does the land owner get a vote or can Huntsville just annex it and make the land owner pay property taxes to the city?
