I attend Whitesburg and I don't know that I would call it a "Mega Church". It is a large church and not everyone likes that. We have about 2000-2200 attending on any given Sunday. There are a number of other churches in the area with similar attendance.

I guess it is just what you are accustomed to. I have never been to a service where there was more than a few hundred people. Having thousands in attendance seems foreign to me.

A number of years ago when my son was about 2 years old we moved to a small town in SW La. where the Baptist and Catholics predominated. We are Episcopalian so shortly after moving to town we went to the little Episcopal Church, which had ~20 members total and the pastor who came from a neighboring town for one service on Sunday. After the service one of the little old ladies greeted us and was so excited to see my son, because in her words "Now we can start a Sunday School!" Everytime I drive by Mayfair I have to think about that little church in Louisiana and starting a Sunday School for one little boy!

We moved to Huntsville 7 yrs ago from Seattle, WA for employment reasons (yes I am an Engineer lol) and bought a home in Madison. We have been very happy with our decision. We have two daughters (15/21) and they have adjusted well.

Coming from Seattle it is true that Huntsville (perhaps to a lesser extent than the rest of the state) is very conservative in its politics and religion. I will never forget one incident during our house hunt trip when my oldest (then 14) in utter surprise and with great volume explained, "Oh my God, that's a Church!!!" ...Coming from a community with small neighborhood Churches she had never seen the "Mega Sized Church" phenomena. ...Welcome to the Bible Belt I said with a chuckle. Nevertheless, our experience has not been one of people being in your face, although I am sure that it happens. Overall it was not a huge cultural adjustment for us but might be for others.

We have been happy with the Madison schools although Bob Jones is quite large and the city does need an additional high school. Schools are funded with property tax and sales tax. Our property tax in Seattle was ~$5700 and $2100 here with a larger home here in Alabama. I received a blog post the other day in my Google alerts (thanks Charles) that discussed a vote coming up in June for a 0.5 sales tax increase and also listed the expansion plans that the funds were going to target. Thought it might be of interest to this conversation.

Kind Regards,

Tim
