Default Take your time

I'm not from Alabama but visit there every year for the NASCAR race.
Now I've mentioned this on the forum before but this time it's to make a point about how friendly and welcoming people are.
We stop on our way to the track at the same two towns for breakfast, gas, ice etc.(some places are closed on Sunday) When we get into town we are waved at and greeted by name. Our 2nd year we were a little shaken up by the fact that one of the restaurants we asked if we wanted the same thing as last year.....So we snickered and said sure! The whole time thinking...no way.
Well, yes way!!! She had it just right! That started the quest to move from Orlando to Alabama. They consider us friends and we do the same.
If you are a church goer...get involved with the church. Talk to people at the store, gas station, bank. Go to a produce stand instead of the grocery and talk there too.
Alabamians talk slow but they sure do love to talk!
Good luck! We'll be there in a few years!!

well I'm about 2 hours from you in Anniston but I am originally from Ohio...close enough haha. I am sorry your feeling a bit lonely but let me assure you 2 weeks is really not alot of time to meet anyone just yet. I have been down here a little over 6 months and am just starting to make friends. It helps that most of them are coworkers of my husband, but I went and got a job not too far from home and met some great folks. It's just a slower pace here and in the south people tend to open up a little slower than up north. It's not a bad thing, it just takes some adjusting thats all. If you have a hobby look for others who enjoy that, if your not working, try a part time job...it did wonders for me just to get out and about. Good luck and let me know if I can help with anything!!

Hi, we actually have quite a few former Michiganders around, a lot from when Saginaw Steering Gear established in Athens. Church is a great place to meet people...check out Web sites and visit several. Volunteer for something at church, or elsewhere. Call the Volunteer Bureau and offer your services, choose United Way, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Audubon Society, library, art museum, Space and Rocket Center, Monte Sano State Park...gosh, there are dozens of great groups. Sign up for a community education course at A & M or UAH. If your neighbor doesn't come meet you, go meet them. A job - even part-time - would give you a new group of acquaintances. There may even be an alumnae group in town. Give your new home at least a year. Welcome!

My husband and his parents and his grandmother, moved from Michigan. They were living in Jackson and White Cloud. We live in Madison now. I know you will love Huntsville, once you get to know some people. We have a newcomers group, if you are interested. I am in real estate and I have 2 little ones. Do you have kids?

If this is your first time away from home then what you are feeling is normal. As many suggested church and volunteering are great ways to meet people. Give it some time and you will come to love the area and the people. Give us an idea of things you like to do and maybe the good people here can suggest a volunteer group. If you like animals, think about getting one. They are great companions plus a great way to meet people if you walk them. Check out the local shelters or animal control, you will find a lot of animals just waiting to keep you company.
