west coast because its not likely to have a eastward moving storm and northward moving storms tend to wobble west. You will get hurricanes that cross over from the east into the west but not many head-on landfalls on the gulf side. miami and the keys are the worst.

Default Hurricanes

I would like to move to Florida with my 2 daughters. We're very scared of the hurricanes, but love the warm weather. What are do you recommend in Florida that is safer than others? Orlando? Kissimmee? Fort Lauderdale? or Tampa? These are the areas that I've thought off.

I thought that the west coast is close to the gulf of mexico, which is a threat with the hurricanes.

The Gulf storms usually hit further north than where *I'm* at...if they hit Florida at all. 2004 was an exception.

Before that, it hadn't been hit with a serious storm since 1960.

Mar1lyn27, I think Florida has the same "hurricane alley" rap. I've lived here since 1958 and 2004 was a historic event with the hurricanes hitting all over, Orlando and Arcadia both in the middle of the state where hit bad! Nature happens, Tallrick has great advise. We don't deal with seasonal issues like snow and ice, we do deal more with drought than hurricanes! So be prepared to not water your lawns as much, don't throw cigarettes on the ground or out your car window (yuck)! Sometimes a good storm is natures way of heat relief. Nature happens no matter where you are... in Florida it happens in the sunshine!

Default hurricanes fro 1998 to now

I did a search of all hurricanes that hit florida over the last 12 years and found that the northwest part of the state ie brooksville, pasco, hernando counties etc. have seen one hurricane that actually glanced their part of the world even during that awful year of 2004 the 'canes that hit the area were down graded to tropical storms when they hit the area I mentioned. It seems cape coral on the west got pretty banged up

Look at a map.

Pick a place that isn't close the the water.

Don't be scared, be prepared.

It's really not that complicated.

agreed I don't understand the concept of being afraid to move to Fla because of the hurricanes.. It kinda baffles me.. Thats like saying you're afraid to move to the NE because of snow, or Cali because of earthquakes.. Every place has something and Florida has the advantage because you get a good weeks warning if not more. You can track the hurricane from the time it forms out in the Atlantic/Gulf till its final landing point. Its not complicated at all and you will have very advanced warnings to either evacuate or "hunker down" as we say. I lived a couple blocks from the beach my entier life and evacuated once (Hurricane Wilma) and ended up coming back the day before it hit and just decided to stay in my home.. Just watch the weather channel and you'll be fine.

have you checked the statistics at www.The Weather Channel.com ? you may find better reasoning than posted opinions from those who have no data to support their opinions. it would help you to make a more informed choice for your travel/relocation options. Have a nice day ! You can Email me at Goodnes19@Comcast.net if you wish to do so..... Blessings !!!!!!!
