Hurricane Charley peeled our roof off. I was up on the roof the next day nailing it back on.

Still, it got me my new job at Home Depot.

It is not the dull, boring sunny days I remember, but the stormy events which are much more rare. Am I the only one?

I like them always have. Love sitting there watching it come in. The real treat is getting the chance to see the eye.

Key West and Hurricanes are the only I miss about Florida. But I do miss them badly. I find myself watching the weather channel when one is out there and thinking 'lucky ducks!'.

Don't get me wrong. Hurricanes can be devastating. And when the insurance companies go belly up and leave people high and dry after their house was blown away, that's horrible and it make me sick for them. But only chuckle heads are killed in them. You stay in the house and if it looks like it's a strong one coming at you, you leave. It's not rocket science.

The last hurricane we went through before moving - must have been in the early summer of '06 and hit just outside Naples - was the best. My best friend moved to NH years ago and one of the things she always said was how much she missed the hurricanes and hurricane parties. So when the storm blew in really good before we loss all phone lines I called her so she could hear it.

We wound up without power for 10 days after that one. But I'd planned ahead - cooked tons of food including pancakes and packed them in ice. Filled 4 - 5 gallon propane tanks for the grill. Had plenty matches and lighters. Filled the tubs with water. Bought tons and tons of bottled water. Lots of canned food. We were prepared. The first nearly week was wonderful - the 'cane brought temps down to the 70s. It was gorgeous. Like camping with all the comforts of home. And how many people can say they made pancakes on a gas grill?? The kids had a blast. Once the temps came back up and it got hot, sticky, and all the bugs were back though it was pretty miserable.

Low grade canes that dump a lot of water without flooding and loss of life and property absolutely. We need a good land bath once in awhile. Pasture watering holes all filled up to the brim is a good thing. It's nice when they run parallel to the coast line and give cool rainy weather in the heat of the summer. We don't need Andrews, Donnas or Charleys. Just a good slow moving tropical depression with much need rain would be the best...

As a kid I lived through several typhoons on Guam. Didn't have to deal with the clean up so it was fun. I was in Naples when Andrew hit. I enjoyed watching the rain and wind. No major damage I called it benign since there was tons of work. I even thought about getting a "I survived Andrew" tee shirt. Then I went to Homestead. OMG Glad I never bought the tee, I'd have been embarrassed to wear it.
I lived a couple of hours in the eye wall of Charley - lost my house.
Now my house is built like a BSH. I got Lexan shutters so I can watch the wind and rain. I live in the tropics and I don't want to live anywhere else.
