Anyone here from Bergen County, NJ and remember the hurricane last Halloween ? Ugh. Many towns lost power - I had no power for 5 full days, and it was COLD at night ....

Let's all pray it's not that bad !

Do you mean the blizzard/rainstorm? The hurricane in the tri-state area was in August - Irene.

Do mortgage companies in the Northeast require you guys to carry Hurricane Insurance like they do down here in Florida?

The Northeast has been hit with more hurricanes in the last few years that have caused more damage than Florida has.

No. Generally in the Northeast, the hurricanes are really destructive not because of winds (they're usually only a tropical storm or less when they get here), but because of the amount of water.

It's not that your house gets destroyed by the storm itself, it's flooding, trees falling from saturated ground, etc that causes the damage.

Anyone in a flood prone zone will be denied Flood insurance around here. But there is no hurricane coverage required. A lot of time that might just be included with the policy.

Just a quick reminder. I'm updating this thread daily.

Anyone care to break down in layman's terms what Sandy is like to mean for DC and Virginia and when?

Strong winds, heavy rain, and inland flooding. It won't make a direct hit on Virginia/Maryland, but it's such a big storm that we will get strong effects from it anyway. Looks like it will be sitting just off the Mid-Atlantic coast around Saturday, and make landfall around New York City Sunday into Monday.
