The 5 PM map looks bad and sad for the keys. The question is now what will those on the gulf coast be faced with? Ike is playing with us like a cat with its prey...
Does not looks good, time to review your hurricane checklist, see link for reference to:

Will this effect Miami very much on the current track?
If you follow the track exactly as it currently is you could get very strong tropical storm force winds to almost hurricane force and rain............
BUT
Remember NOT to follow that line as the storm could go further south or further north...... So prepare and get ready if we are put under watches and warnings.
Andrew went south at the last minute as did Katrina when those storm visited us. Charley turned to the east much earlier than they expected
The plotted track is where the eye may go. However, Ike is more than just an eye. The last forecast said that hurricane force winds can be found up to 35 miles around the eye. That means 70 miles total, right, plus however big the eye is?
I think there's very little hope that Miami won't be affected at all; it's more a matter of degree now.
My dad and stepmom live in Ft. Myers, and they'll probably experience part of Ike as well.
Location: Lots of sun and palm trees with occasional hurricane :)

Seems the hotel didn't survive but he did. Nothing was said by his superior who went back the DC while Andrew did his thing. She was green about such things and nearly got her crew killed. Take this ole boy seriously. If a Cat 4 or even 5 comes in it will be nasty. You will see what looks like a third world city when it's over.
Ah. Just getting back here today.
Nomad the problem with evacuating is where would I go. Besides the pets, I have my 78 year old mother also. To go to a shelter here, the pets have to be pre-registered and approved and I certainly can't take all 6. I have 4 cats and 2 dogs - 2 carriers, 1 big crate. I could buy more but it wouldn't really help.
If I went to a pet-friendly hotel, where? Just about all of Florida could be a problem, Georgia, NC, SC? I really don't see how any place could be more secure than my own house actually, given the circumstances and logistics of going anywhere.
VPCats, have you seen the pictures of the destruction and devastation from Andrew?! I wouldn't bet on my safety in a regular house with a Cat 4/5 storm heading my way!
