Are hurricanes a big problem for the NE coast of Florida or is more the Gulf Coast?

Jon, the NE Florida coast has had the lowest frequency of hurricanes of any coastal area of Florida. One reason is the fact that this section of the coast recedes. Since 1900 more major hurricanes have hit New York City than Jacksonville. But that is not to say this area does not suffer the yearly effects of storms. There have been times when power has been out for nearly a week even though the actual winds were barely hurricane force.

Default There are bad thunderstorms...

Florida has gotten a lot of pub on the hurricanes but little is made of thunderstorms here in Florida. They can be very severe, spawn tornadoes, hail, and flooding. Here in the summer months we keep internet radar on constantly as well as weather service warnings for tornadoes. It is not uncommon to get bad thunderstorms with winds up to 55 mph, so choose your home site wisely. We will be spending over $4k in a couple of weeks to take down damaged and dead trees in the yard (2 ac), ahead of the storms. Not doing this could mean damage to structures and other trees.

I grew up in Northeast Alabama, so I'm used to bad thunderstorms and tornados.
