I don't plan on buying or building a house in FL for a long time (at 22 and living alone for now just wouldn't make sense), but I'l have to keep the concrete house in mind. Would be kind of cool too to have the roof double as a patio. lol.

tallrick, do you have a picture of your house?

Funny how they "predict" each and every year devistating hurricanes in Florida yet I have lived here my entire life and have seen very few hurricanes. 1993, 2004, and 2005 but many more years WITHOUT any hurricanes. I don't believe in these predictions....just like last year. I think they said there would be 17 hurricanes last year and yet there was not even one!! Sorry but you can't predict mother nature. I would be happy if the weatherman could just predict the rain and they can't even do that half of the time. They say no rain and it rains, they say rain and there is no rain! So here's my official prediction.....No Hurricanes this year that will affect Florida!!

Lightbulb Andrea is the 1st for 2007

A system off the coast of Georgia and The Carolinas is the first named storm of the year, 3 weeks before hurricane season starts.

I would not listen to these predictions, there are way too many predicting this thing or that thing, giving best ratings or worse ratings to this place and that place. What I would do, is just be prepared, have your supplies ready, and evacuate when these storms are so large, the chance of them striking are obvious. Yes at least with huricannes there are a number of days to prepare and get out before they hit. You get no warning with earthquakes, and may or may not get a few minutes with Tornadoes.

We are so glad we moved out Florida two years ago. No more hurricanes for us
Good luck to everybody in the South with these storms.

I really need to take some pics, but I deliberately let it get run-down to try and get my home assessed lower. Once the tax situation is decided I will fix up, either to stay or to move. I am so confident in the quality of my home that I no longer evacuate for anything under cat 3. If I lose my home and/or life in a hurricane it was just meant to be.

Default Have the people of New England moved away....from their homes...

....just because some winters are worse than others and N'oreasterners flood the coast?

Listen now...I've lived on Anna Maria Island since 1991....you can either enjoy your home, where ever it may be...or you can hide in the closet....I think a few years back, we had a hurricane going on & they were moving the planes at Andrews Air base up in the panhandle. As it turned out, the hurricane didn't show up & low & behold, they crashed a plane into someone's home....which, just goes to show you, there's nowhere really safe...hide in your house, & a plane lands on it...

I hate to think of a big storm hitting the Tampa Bay area, but as far as the rest of the country goes, I think I'd rather live here than anywhere else. We have the palm trees, sunrises/sunsets, beautiful cities across the state, beaches of world reknown and of course, on the bad side, the crime to go with it....just as it's been since the beginning of civilization...

You've got to take the good with the bad...plain & simple...

...but just to prepare, I have my hurricane box & pictures in ziplock baggies...Guess this is a good time to go over papers & pictures & downsize to something convenient to carry!

You are right. When the lake bed of Okechobee catches fire we got a real problem.. I could go for a few strong tropical storms to get the water levels back up.

I have lived in Miami my whole life 30 years (with the exception of 4 years for school) and have been through too many hurricance to list. But I do remember the Big One Andrew. After you go through something like Andrew (which wasn't forecast to hit where it hit, at the very last minute before landfall it turned) you listen to what the forecasters say (even if they are not sure) and you just prepare.
