My good friend has a Soul and really likes it. For some reason, I just think it fills a niche. It rides higher up, it has great visibility, it has decent cargo capacity - yet isn't big and cumbersome, and it's relatively cheap. Yeah, people who have more money might forgo it for more expensive sedans and CUVs, and of course there are people who don't like that boxy look. But, I like that it exists. A segment of seniors seem to like it, and among younger drivers it fulfills some cross-over functions without breaking the bank. It's a good thing to have around.
Does the 2017 base model Soul come with A/C and power windows?
Even though you didn't ask this, I thought I'd share it anyway. The Soul base model has a starting MSRP of $16,100 (with a 6-speed manual transmission). The optional 6-speed automatic transmission appears a bit pricey at $1,600, but it also adds remote keyless entry, cruise control and a front center console/armrest which aren't available on the 6-speed manual base model.
Looks like Kia Soul is on top of my Short list followed by
Another Yaris
Corolla
Elantra
Civic
Reason the Soul interests me is ease of ingress/egress. at 70yrs old the body is just not as flexible as it once was.Nice to know the base model comes with A/C and power windows.

You mentioned the Yaris as a possibility. Have you considered the Yaris iA sedan? It was actually introduced in 2016 as the Scion iA, then rebadged as a Toyota when Scion was discontinued.
The Yaris iA is actually manufactured by Mazda and sold elsewhere in the world as the Mazda2. Mazda doesn't sell the Mazda2 in the U.S. or Canada. Toyota decided that it would be more cost effective to buy the cars from Mazda rather than develop a sedan version of the Yaris (which is a 3-door or 5-door hatchback).
The 'iA' is rated higher by all of the major automotive websites and Consumer Reports rates it as the #1 subcompact car. It has a much more modern powertrain (6-speed automatic transmission with Sport mode compared to the ancient 4-speed automatic in the regular Yaris) and it pays off in acceleration and manages a 3mpg increase over the old Yaris (35mpg combined vs. 32mpg combined). The best part is that the 'iA' is pretty much loaded (for a subcompact) and has no options beyond choosing manual or automatic transmission and exterior color. It is priced in the same range as the Yaris L/LE 5-door, but I found 300+ advertised on Cars.com for less than $16k. If you're considering a Yaris, at least check out the Yaris iA also.
One suggestion, while you're checking out the Soul, also take a look at the Kia Forte. In paticular, the Kia Forte5 (5-door hatchback) which is much more useful than the sedan. They still have 2016 models in stock and the 2017 Forte has a 'facelift' so they're very motivated to move the 2016s. A 2016 Forte5 LX 5-door Automatic is selling for $14k-$15k (more than $5k off sticker, which includes $3k in cash incentives).
My current ride is an 08 Yaris sedan that i bought new in 08, remarkably reliable and economical vehicle and i would buy another but at 70yrs old flexibility issues are giving me trouble getting in and out of it thus the interest in the Soul.

I'm short and I consider Yaris' to be clown cars. I can barely fit. The Kia Soul sits high up and is roomy.
