We got a base Soul in '14 with the automatic transmission. To me it had everything I wanted and needed, nothing I didn't. So in that sense it was the simpler the better. A larger engine would be welcome pulling out from stop lights and merging from on ramps, but on the highway and in street traffic and up hills its not really lacking. The trade off would be it would get larger tires with the plus model which they say reduces ride comfort. So I wouldn't want to give up what is pretty good but not great. 16 inch tires on a small car seem big enough. If I were to replace this car with a new one I'd get the Plus for the bigger engine, though. More power is never unwelcome.
Quietness, ride quality, power, the Soul is surprising for a small budget car. It has a straight up seating position which I love and the seats are like office chairs. I have less than a 10 minute commute. MPG is not great for its size, though. Expect about low 30s MPG highway. If I drove 40 minutes I'd look at a more plush ride. But then you're looking at something more expensive and with less MPG, anyway. That's the trade off there.
Its been 100% reliable and trouble free for almost 4 years now. And its build quality is evident in how well its held up inside and out. So that's peace of mind. If you want a more standard ride for about the same price the Forte might suit you. The interior is very similar to the Soul and its number are slightly better in MPG, I believe.
I just bought a 2019 Inferno Red Base 1.6 Automatic Soul on Black Friday. The Base now comes with features, that previously were on higher end models. Backup Camera is
now standard Equip.
I got a number of discounts on this car. So I'm very satisfied with the price of this Soul. I find the ride is very smooth, and the car handles very well.
Since you're buying CPO you can get a better deal, so I'd go for the Plus. I'd agree with buying what you want since you'll be driving it for a while. And who wants to buy a car they don't really like?
I plan to buy the base since it's the only model that comes with a stick, and now a backup camera. Will probably upgrade to the larger screen with the infotainment system.
I own 2 2014 Souls that I bought in 2016. Best vehicles that I have owned. My prize possession Soul, I drove 150 miles to get because it had the Whole Shebang Package and was a very limited edition. They were sold before getting off the truck at a premium.... Heated and Air Cooled Leather seats on a Soul... who would have thought? It came with the sticker which was 29000 back in 2014... I paid 14500 almost 2 years ago.... love it..
