We are thinking about moving to Idaho Falls from California to be closer to relatives who moved there 5 years ago.
We have a daughter who will be in 5th grade this year and is Special Education because of a learning disability.
I don't love her school situation, but I don't hate it- she is in a class with 7-10 kids- most with autism and has main steaming for reading, science, music and all the lunch/recess times. She has always attended school in the same district, so I really have nothing to compare her services and quaility of service to! There was a new student last year who came from another school district and was not overly impressed with our district- the communication with teachers, the services and the basic set up of the program.
Can anyone tell me what they thought of the special education system in Idaho Falls? Did you move from a better program to IF's? Or was it worse where you moved from?

I don't think the special ed in I.F. is as good now as it once was- there have been deep cuts to all public education in Idaho the past 2 years. I could be wrong though, since I have no small children in school here now. Back in the 80's and 90's, the special ed programs were pretty good and effective- one of my sons had early learning disabilites, and District 91 did a grat job with him. He became literate, something I doubted would ever happen, graduated High School, and went on to complete a 3-year auto technology curriculum that put him 1 year away from an engineering degree.

It will depend on whether or not your child will be enrolled in District 91 or District 93. 91 is mostly within Idaho Falls' city limits, and 93 is mostly the rest of Bonneville County. You could enquire about the programs from either of them... a short Google should turn them up.

Thanks for the reply!

I did email the district (District 91), but what are they going to say? Only good things of course! A google search didn't turn up any reviews or comments about the special ed program. I was also unable to find any information on what type of programs they use. But I know even that varies from school to school in our district- depending on what the PTA funds.

I think the cuts are everywhere. We are currently in California- a state on the edge of bankruptcy! You want to talk about cuts?! Our district has no school buses (except for special ed and special events), and PTA funds the art, music and extra curricular programs. My high schooler's sports programs were almost cut out too! Now they are hugely funded by us parents.

I'm so happy to hear that your son is doing so well! What a great story!

Thanks again for the reply. Anybody else??
