They are planning to divide it into multiple lots, a mixture of medical and small retail.

So I guess it's just skinny houses they are putting on Fremont ave. They call them Boisean as if that's where it originated. There are two of them under construction on Lomax. The ones in Boise have no basement, 2 levels above ground. It's just about the only way it works. The ones on Lomax look and feel like a trailer on a foundation.

The smaller retail building on outlet Blvd that used to be the double down casino is under renovation. Lots of activity near the sunnyside interchange.

This is an expansion for Westmark. They are turning it into a conference/meeting building.

This whole intersection on the 15 is poised to become more important. I thought when sleep inn went in a decade ago they were ahead of the curve. Like it or not this interchange is poised for mega development.

I've heard various things for the last decade but a ton of rumors these last few months. Idaho Falls is undergoing an identity reform of sorts, the whole area is about to blossom.

There's the public meeting for the South Downtown or "SoDo" as it's now being referred to tonight at the library.

I'm hoping our city sees the benefit of refreshing the area and by that I mean leveling the majority and going with some modern ideas based around height, density and mixed use.

In my opinion this area should be where the new tallest is built, nothing super tall but 10 to 15 floors.

However I'm afraid the city will stick with preservation rather than innovation, I guess we'll see.

Did you attend to give us some feedback?

I attended the library event. There were no real specifics provided on specific plans for specific spots, it was more like a bunch of storyboard easels on which attendees were invited to provide feedback. There would be a board with a bunch of types of residential units, for example, and attendees could leave post-it notes with what they liked and didn't like about the pictures (freestanding houses, rowhouses, apartment buildings, etc). And then one for commercial spots, one for parks, etc.

The time I was there was supposed to just be for residents of the area, and many of the conversations that I overheard and notes that I read seemed resistant to big changes. I think there's a lot of people who are worried about getting priced out of that neighborhood, and many others who are resistant to the city's growth overall. And that's understandable if you're used to a certain way of life, but I think people need to understand that this area is going to continue growing whether they like it or not, and the city needs to be prepared for that. That area south of downtown is, to me, the most natural spot for more higher-density growth to happen. It's close to downtown and to the green belt, and it's underdeveloped right now.
