I don't live in IF currently, but I was born there, lived in Boise all my life since and went to college in Logan UT (not far south of IF). Much of my family still lives in IF, so I've been there a lot. Here is my take on the religion topic:

I'm not religious. At all. But much of my family is LDS, and pretty much all of my friends growing up were LDS, and then in college in Logan, it is like 90% LDS, so all my college friends are LDS too. My maid of honor at my wedding is strongly LDS. I have found that if you are a person with roughly the same values as they have, and at least willing to tolerate any behaviors you don't participate in, you can be friends with them. For example: Growing up, my LDS best friend was not allowed to swim on Sundays. As long as we would honor that, and not try to convince her to swim on Sundays, we had no issue. A more recent example as an adult, is that I have a bit of a foul mouth, but when I'm around my LDS friends, I am able to curb that impulse so as not to offend them. We get along great. If I let something slip from time to time, they know that I didn't do it on purpose to offend them. But if I were the type who wanted everyone to conform to my standards, and expected them to swear up a storm if they wanted to be my friend, I'd have a really tough time fitting in. It also helps that I'm not a partier or a drinker. Don't expect your LDS neighbors to want to hang out at the bar with you after work. And if you have a BBQ, make sure you have drinks of all types, while some LDS will drink soda or even beer, many LDS don't drink caffinated beverages either.

So in short, if you don't make them feel uncomfortable, and you don't feel uncomfortable being around them, you should get along just fine. Look at them first as people and not as a religion and then see if you share enough values to be friends, just as you would want them to do to you.

As for private schools, do LDS even have private schools? They have Sunday school, I know. But all the private schools I know of over here in Boise are all catholic run. I've never heard of an LDS private school.

Ooh, I feer the moose. I ran into one out walking around Hebgan Lake once. It was big, with a full rack, only about 30 feet away and obviously not happy I was there. I backed away slowly until we had a few trees between us, then headed a different way. They can be mean. I have also seen a wolverine up there, fortunately while I was inside a car. I fear them too, I understand they can take down a bear.

John Thompson, the Canadian explorer who was Lewis & Clark combined into one person, was afraid of nothing in the northwest except for the "grate terible Moose Dere" according to his journals.
A young cow moose once ran a buddy of mine and me up a tree in the Teton Natl. Park and kept us there for most of 3 hours. They are not disposed to be messed with, for sure.

I don't think a wolverine could take down a full-grown moose, but they are also critters who are quite fierce. I'm sure that one would discourage a moose, and could most likely take a newborn calf if given the chance. They can live quite well on a diet of nothing but bones, and are often the very last critter to visit an old kill that has been completely stripped.

Simply put, are there really gangs and a crime problem in Idaho Falls? Usually drugs go hand in hand with the gang factor as well. I figure an area dominated by Mormons with a very wholesome all American town reputation would be the last place to find this problem. Some of you in the know please tell me because it makes no sense when looking at this place from the outside. I live on the East Coast and Idaho Falls looks like Mayberry to me! (Jk)

I will say I used to hate Idaho falls, I have been here 12 years & never realized the true beauty of the place until I recently put in for a transfer at work & am being sent to Alabama. As I look into it I realize Idaho falls is actually a wonderful place to live & raise kids. The crime is present as in any city but I live in a great neighborhood & have never had any issues with crime. The schools are great & you have a pretty good mix of people with different beliefs, for the most part it is easy to get along with people here. I am now regretting ever asking to transfer, I am going to hate living in Alabama vs Idaho!

A bit surreal when it comes down to it, right? Good luck in 'Bama, I couldn't handle the humidity there myself.

Thanks. I am not going to enjoy it so much I'm sure. Idaho falls isn't so bad when you put it up against Alabama, I think I'm actually going to miss Idaho.

As for crime, I still tend to leave my car unlocked for short periods of time, (shopping, stopping home for lunch, etc.), and I admit to leaving my home unlocked for short periods too. Probably not smart, but the point is I don't worry too much about it, whereas I would in some of my past locations, (Chicago suburbs, Seattle, even Eugene, OR.) Don't get me wrong, I don't encourage this, even in Idaho Falls!

Interesting topic - Idaho in general looks great as far as housing affordability (and property tax!!), scenery and from what I read, the people. Me and my wife are planning a move to USA and Idaho has been on my radar for a while (Meridian at first, but now any 'bigger city' in the state seems like a right choice). Idaho Falls came of interest ever since I found they have a decent university there offering an interesting EDD program. And I like the vicinity to other state lines...

I was born and raised in Central California (SF Bay area and Stockton CA) both high crime rates, especially Stockton! There isn't a discernible crime problem in I. F. at all, and I mean its almost negligible. There's small property theft crimes but overall this is one peaceful place, I leave my house and car unlocked all the time, i lost my keys for a month and didn't miss em one bit. You are going to be in a right to carry state so I have believe the crime rate here is partly due to that, although it is illegal to carry inside city limits. If you like to fish/ fly fish you'll be in heaven!

You and I share a past, born in Los Gatos, raised in Fresno... when we moved here over 20 years ago, my husband likened it to Fresno in the 1960's. Since then the crime, while not on the scale as Stockton or even Fresno, has grown. Sad sometimes to see what growth can bring.

The Aurora Colorado movie theater massacre brings some of this home. Yes, the Denver metro is much larger than the IF metro, but I can't help believe that something just as bad could happen right here, as the demographics are similar. Unlikely, but not out of the realm of possibility. Answer? There really is none, unfortunately.
