Hi all, I'm looking for some ways to give back to the community -- and make some friends along the way. What are some things that you've done? I'm specifically looking for helping the less fortunate, cleaning up/restoring parks and trails, other outdoorsy stuff.

First things first, I'm looking for a soup kitchen (for lack of a better term) to help out at on Thanksgiving. Any ideas?

Yes! Volunteering always benefits more than one person.

Soup Kitchen is always looking for help. Here is a link: The Soup Kitchen - The Soup Kitchen Idaho Falls Idaho | Food Resource Food Pantry, Soup Kitchen, or Food Bank There is also a picture of where the Soup Kitchen is on S. Boulevard. I believe it's at St. John's Church.

Thanksgiving dinner is huge for volunteers. It's at the Elks Lodge on E. Elva, by Pinecrest Golf Course. I'll see if I can get you a contact person and PM that info to you. Many families and others volunteer each year so be flexible, if you can, about potentially delivering food from the food bank or cooked dinners to home bound. Depending on your time the group who sponsors this needs help probably could use help more than on Thanksgiving.

The Scouts are doing a food pick up this Sat. I imagine the food bank could use more help.

There are so many ways and needs for volunteers. If you have a Facebook account go to Idaho Falls Magazine (also you can check idabofallsmagazine.com), and post your interests of where you would like to volunteer. Lots of folks post, so a variety of backgrounds. You probably have to like IF Magazine on Facebook to be able to post there.

Habitat for Humanity and Eastern Idaho Community Action Partnership - EICAP Home are also good places to check. There are opportunities to coach, if you have favorite sports or a nondenominational Scout Troop in Idaho Falls.

Contact the Salvation Army. While multiple churches and groups all help with Thanksgiving, I believe the Salvation Army coordinates efforts.

There are so many opportunities to help others locally. Starting with the Salvation Army and learning where those who need volunteers post that info will keep you as busy as you want to be tmp4.

If I'm wrong and the Salvation Army isn't in charge this year, I feel comfortable saying the Salvation Army will tell you how they need volunteers and they will know what agency or person is the correct contact for the Community Thanksgiving.

Good for you tmp4!

And the Scouts are located on 4th St. You might want to contact them as this will be a huge food pick up by the Scouts in 3 days.
