Default How dog friendly is Idaho Falls?

How dog friendly is Idaho Falls? I have 3 medium - large size dogs that I consider to be family members and most people tell me they don't treat their human children as well as I treat my dogs.

Does Idaho Falls offer ammenities for dogs such as great veterinary care, dog day care, dog parks, dog training facilities and dog clubs, etc? I also have an interest in dog assisted therapy/activities - is this a welcome and active concept in Idaho Falls?

Thank you for any information you may have on the topic.

When you find right niche in IF you'll find we're big on our pets. I work for an elite boarding facility that offers both over night care as well as doggy daycare, feel free to DM me for information if you'd like.

At this point there is no dog park, however there are plenty of clubs; Upper Snake River Valley Dog Training Club, Eagle Rock Dog Club. There are also several rescue groups if you'd like to get involved.

Now for something that might not thrill you much. Bonneville County (including Idaho Falls) has a two dog limit unless you apply for a non-commercial kennel license which brings your neighbors into possibly "voting you off the island". More on that if you send me a message

The business where I work tends to have clients much like you, their pets are indeed their children and they are treated as such.

As far as veterinary care, there are several reputable vets right in IF. I however followed mine down to Shelley. She knows my dogs and they love her and the other two vets at the clinic as well. For ortho issues, it's usually referred out to Sun Valley and many cancer issues are referred up to Jackson Hole.

Hope this helps

Thank you both for your speedy replies and all the very helpful info. Idaho Falls sounds like it could be a good possibility for relo, but the two dog minimum sounds like it could be a problem. I'm not sure how to DM, but I would love to know more about Cleosmoms boarding facility and how much neighborhood resistance there typically is when one applies for a non-commercial kennel license.

Click on my name as you see it in the upper left corner of this reply. When you click you'll see a drop down menu, just select "send a direct message". Once I get and reply look at the top left corner where it says "welcome jj68", underneath it will say if you have any notifications, if so just click and it will guide you

cleosmom,

Your new screen still says, "welcome" ~ J/K. It should say resident expert logging in.

P.S. jj68 I'm not trying to detract from your important questions both about possible relocation and contacting cleosmom directly. I'm trying to encourage her to start some kind of thread that talks about animals and eastern Idaho (I guess I should say non-food chain animals).

She has helped a lot of people with many things, including me! You're in good hands. Please make sure you rep her for all she's done to help you.

I'm no expert about licensing issues for animals. You may want to check out the websites for Bonneville County or Idaho Falls to learn more or at least whom you could email/call for the final answers. These are their website:

Bonneville County (for outside of Idaho Falls):

Welcome to Bonneville County, Idaho

Idaho Falls:

City of Idaho Falls - Where Great Adventure Begins... (http://www.ci.idaho-falls.id.us/main/Index.asp - broken link)

Also, here are websites for both Ammon and Iona. I don't know how much info they will have in them.

Ammon: City of Ammon Idaho

Iona: The City of Iona Homepage

It may partially depend on if you are in totally rural Bonneville County or in the jurisdiction of Ucon, Iona, Ammon or Idaho Falls, as well as how much land you have. I do believe the intent of having the animals one does plus how much room they have for them is one reason the City of Idaho Falls doesn't allow more than 2 dogs/house.

Good luck on finding the info you need.

MSR,

Thank you so much for all the very helpful links, it was very nice of you to take the time to put that together and I truly appreciate your help. Idaho Falls sure seems like a wonderful place to live. I haven't visited yet, but it seems to have the ammenities I look for and seems to be dog friendly. Even with the two dog limit, there is still the possibility of getting the non-commercial kennel license, and considering my reasons for needing one, I don't think I would be denied, but would have to further research that if things progress to the point of moving there. Cleosmom also provided me with alot of very helpful information.

Thank you also for telling me about 'rep'. I'm still very new to this forum and did not know about it, but I think I figured out how to do it, so thanks for letting me know about it.

I still have more research to do and have applied for work in the area. So if I am lucky, I will get to visit and see Idaho Falls in person!

Thanks again to both you and Cleosmom for all the info and for your kindness! I'll let you know if things progress.

I love our vet in Shelley, thank you cleosmom!

FYI, my new chiropractor has experience treating dogs as well. His name is Dr. Cleverley.

i am considering moving to Idaho Falls soon and have 3 dogs and 3 cats. Is there anywhere within commuting distance to Idaho Falls that we can buy a house and peacefully live with county ordinances? It seems like eastern Idaho isnt that pet friendly

Idaho Falls is very pet friendly. So much so that multiple dogs were causing neighbor problems, so the city eventually limited the number of dogs allowed in a household to two.

That doesn't mean a lot of folks keep to the limit, though. It's one of those things where it all depends on the dogs, the owner, and the neighbors. Getting caught with 3 or more dogs would be a misdemeanor, and you would have to pay for a kennel license, but you could keep all the dogs. I know a lot of folks who have owned 3 dogs for many years; it's kind of like going over the speed limit- no problem on a street with no traffic, larger problem if caught on a street with no traffic.

This town has always been full of dogs, so they are more tolerated here than in some other places I've lived. Dogs who bark continually get the most complaints. Occasional barking, or barking for short periods doesn't upset most folks much.

If the dogs have a license, the pound must notify the owner if they escape, and cannot euthanize a tagged dog until the owner is notified. The tags are good for a long time- either 4 or 6 years (can't remember), and if expired, the pound is still under the same restrictions. But you would have to pay for a new tag before you could claim the dog. Obtaining a tag requires a record of proper inoculations.

Most often, a loose dog will be returned by a neighbor or someone, if the dog is friendly. Oftentimes, the dog catcher will return a dog as well if tagged. Chipping speeds up the process a lot.

I have an old dog that is very friendly and goes on a ramble if I forget to close a gate. He's been busted several times over the years, and been brought home by neighbors many more times. I've never been fined because he always has a valid tag.

As far as I know, there's nothing on the number of cats.

You can keep as many dogs as you want in the county, but Ammon, Lincoln, Iona, Ucon, and the other small villages in the county may have their own pet restrictions. Home subdivisions built out in the county may also have homeowner's restrictions as well. Commuting here is typically less than 30 minutes, depending on where you live and how far out the property is.

There are lots of homes and small acreages very close to the city limits in all directions surrounding I.F. You could keep as many dogs as you want with any of those places. Of course, letting a dog run loose in the county can result in impoundment, so responsibility is required just as it is in the city.
