Hi,

I'm thinking of applying to Idaho State and was wondering if people can get around Pocatello without the car, mainly from campus, is their a grocery store within walking distance?

Also, hows the school? Anyone know and is it a college town?

I only know Pocatello from driving through/spending the night on the way to or from North Idaho, but I looked up the public transit system, and here are a few links. Routes A, B and C stop by ISU, so all depending on the bus schedule, it looks like you'd be able to get around:

Pocatello Regional Transit

Others may be able to help you with details. Don't forget to do a forum search, too. Good luck!

There is a bus system, but it is limited. There is an Albertsons grocery within walking distance of ISU, but you probably wouldn't want to do it in winter. There are various restaurants and stores within the ISU vicinity, but the variety isn't great.

It is a college town, and it isn't. By that, I mean ISU is there, but Pocatello itself is a mish-mash of college students, local business that isn't necessarily related to the school, some high-tech, a lot of service-related industry, and farm-related business. Kind of hard to describe, but at the end of the day, it is half a college town, and half a smaller rural oriented center.

Graduated from ISU years ago - but visited it not too long ago and it appears about the same. I can't see not having a car in college, but it can be done. I lived within walking/biking distance to campus in the nearby neighborhood.

As for the school - I did pretty well in my career as a nurse, thanks to the education I received from ISU. I appreciated the smaller size of the school as I transferred from a school with 50,000 students. You actually get to talk with your professors and they get to know you on a first name basis.

If you decide on ISU - just prepare yourself for some cold, miserable winters -

Good luck.

I don't want to bash ISU, but I wouldn't particularly want to go there, unless I was into nuclear physics or nursing. My family originally comes from the area so I've been there a lot through out my life. Pocatello is an alright city. I don't think I could see myself living there though. It is pretty blue-collar because the Simplot plant and Union Pacific are major employers, so unions are pretty big, probably the only place in Idaho where they are popular.

My biggest grievence is the weather. It is cold. I feel like a Southpark character when I am there. For a good chunk of the year the temperature and wind keep you pretty bundled up. I was there last weekend and it already feels like January in Boise.

On a side note I went to the ISU football team. And they stink. ha Some guy literally walked up and gave us free tickets. Wish that would happen here.

The cold in Pocatello is relative. It IS slightly colder than Boise, but warmer than Idaho Falls, Bozeman, Billings, and most of the upper midwest.

I'm not worried about after college because I can always go back to California, what I'm worried about is why is it so easy to get in to that school? Is it a bad school an easy school party school?

It's not a bad school. And it definately is not a party school being in Mormon country. It is a very dry campus campus. Public colleges in Idaho are just easy to get into. U of I, BSU and ISU. They are all relatively cheap too, compared to schools around the country.

Yeah, I'm liking everything about it so far.

I found the cost of living in Pocatello (ie rent) was very low and the tuition also low. My nursing education led me to an outstanding military/nursing career - for which I credit ISU for the preparation.
