<---service advisor for 25 years with various dealers (13 different car lines overall)
I will NEVER put my wife in anything other than a German car (for safety), will NEVER drive American (reliability issues) and will NEVER buy any car thats not Made In Japan (I will lease anything else)

So... that's a no on the Outback? Mine was made in Indiana and I love it. I have only put 45,000 miles on it since I bought it 2 1/2 years ago. Although, I would love to try the new Volvo XC(60, 70, or 90).

Appreciate your expertise. But maybe your wife is also secretly wishing for a Jeep Commander!

Subaru is Japanese or sometimes made in the USA but its still a Japanese model so absolutely qualifies. I LOVE the WRX to drive but just not enough optional upgrades electronic-wise when compared to other co's for my liking.
Subaru is awesome... not as "reliable" as the big 3 (honda/toyota/nissan) but 10000% more rugged and built for mud/snow

actually she wishes for one of those Cherokee SRT's
but after her family having owned MANY dodge/jeep/chrysler vehicles over the years and being stranded on many an occasions all "dreams" remain just that =-)
Honestly the one thing I have learned over the years is that NO car company has all perfect models. Even the big luxury car lines. I wouldnt drive a 2006-2008 Mercedes ML, GL, R class or 2003-2007 E-class if you gave them to me for free...

I think the Forester is still made in Japan. I bought an older 2004 used for a low price, it has a J as the first letter on the VIN code. Good safety and reliability.

The ONE thing that drove me nuts about the Outback was that living on a dirt/gravel road in northern Idaho, the newer wheels collect mud and ice on the inside of them. If you try spraying it off at a carwash, it can unbalance the wheels and create a terrible vibration. I've never had that happen with any other vehicle. But if you don't have to drive through absolute slop on a daily basis during mud season...no problem.
On that has not been mentioned yet is Mazda. CX-5 or CX-9. VERY Underrated and made in Japan. Too bad the CX-7 is no longer made.
