Cool Need information about Elk City, Idaho

I am looking at mountain homes on a river in Elk City, It looks beautiful and peaceful to retire. I do not know anything about the town or the people there. Is it a nice place to live? How is the town? I am looking for a home in the surrounding tree areas near or on a river.

I have not been to Elk City yet, just looking at homes on the net. I am looking for a home in the mountains and on a river. I don't know anything about the town. I am from the bay area (Calif) and I want to be away from the fast pace of life.

Default Elk City

My husband and I went to Elk City a couple of months ago. It is a very long way into Elk City on a fairly narrow winding along the river road. I would imagine in the winter the road can be icy. Once you get off the river road you still have a good climb out to Grangeville. Wider nicer road. I believe it is about 60 miles or so from Elk City to Grangeville. There are wonderful little camp grounds all along the river. There is another road turn off to Mount Idaho I heard is a bit shorter through to Grangeville. We did not go that way so I can not comment on how that road is. It is a pretty drive in and out. I would not like to have to know I had to go that far to do my regular shopping. We travel 50 miles each way from here to shop but it is on HWY 95 and a pretty good road and if it snows or is icy we just wait and go a different day.

Elk City is supposed to be great for hunting and fishing. But that is a one trip in for a week or two or month and back out again and then going back to life as usual. I would say it is a great place to get away to.

Unless you think you want to live in the middle of beautiful nowhere and make a trip to town once every couple of weeks and shop the local grocery for quick shopping I would not recomend moving to Elk City. You MUST go there before making up your mind. It really is pretty in the area. There are some very old houses in the small Elk City town. On the way in along the river there were some pretty places and I think I remember a couple for sale. the people we visited with were very nice.

We first moved to Idaho from the Sacramento area, Newcastle. We moved to Clayton Idaho and 9 1/2 miles up the East Fork River road. Clayton was population 39 then. Huge difference from Sacramento. We lived on the river and it was great. We were 25 miles each way to the grocery store which is close compared to Elk City. I am sure there is a small grocery there but it is not what you would be used to. We did fine with a couple of big shopping trips to Idaho Falls or Pocatello a couple times a year. A hundred and eighty nine miles each way. With the internet it would be much easier to live remotely now. There will NEVER be high speed internet in Elk City. :^(( I checked into it already. You might be able to get the satellite internet??

After we were involved in a flood we do NOT want to be on a river or creek. Be sure when you pick out your river house you are on the higher side and the high water can get away from you on the other side and not back up against a hill or canyon and come back towards you. We never dreamed we would get flooded when we bought our last river house. It was supposed to be considered a 100 year flood. I would rather live on a hill and look down on the river which we do now.

I can not stress enough to come up and visit and spend time looking around several areas. We have been here in Idaho 21 years now and really love it.

Chris

Thank you so much for the information about the roads and the travel time to go into a larger town. We do plan on visiting there next month.

Elk City is beautiful, but very remote. While out there check out Dixie. Dixie is even more remote, but very beautiful.

Smile Elk City

Hello...
We live in Grangeville about 40 miles from Elck City... Although it is gorgeous it is very remote and about 110 miles from Lewiston where there is costco walmart ect... The roads are very icy along the river in the winter... We moved here from Oroville, Ca last year... We love it... You could not pay us to go back... The stats on this web site say Elk City has over 1000 people... Maybe a 100... My husband and I have traveled all over around here... The people here are sooo awesome. Grangeville is actually a perfect retirement town... Many retires here... Orofino is also a very nice area....and Cottonwood... I do virtual tours for realestate so here is my web page
Clear Water Virtual Imaging and here is the most honest realtor around LLoyd Welborn... We spent a year looking for property and talked to many people...We took three trips here....and everyone you talk to says the same thing about LLoyd...What LLoyd says you can believe...his web page is
Grangeville Real Estate, Grangeville Realtor , Idaho Real Estate , Windermere Real Estate Good Luck with your search and if you have anymore questions please ask. We own the Lube and Oil shop on the Hwy next to zip trip and talk to a lot of people every day...Idaho County in general is so far from the hussle...It took my husband three weeks to adjust to the very slow pace here...
Stacey

Hello, I actually own a home in Elk City. If you just visit here you don't really get a true feel for
the area. It is somewhat remote-that's the reason people live here. The people are very nice and friendly but not too intrusive. There are easily 1000 people that live in Elk City-they just keep to themselves for the most part. It may be a bit of a culture shock to go from SF to EC however. If getting away from the craziness is what you want-I have the perfect home for it. It overlooks the mountains of Elk City and most days you can see forever. There is a lot of snow in the winter but they keep the roads very clear. If you decide this place is for you-I may have a log home for sale soon. I might have to sell to pay for my kid to go to college!
