attention everyone...I came to twin falls Id.from california and 3 days later I have west nile fever! I love this place but am saddened with the reality of something that can kill me or leave lifetime damage!I think the officials have a moral and civic duty to handle thi problem a little better eg: more public sign warnings..tv ads ..just a word of caution ....I think it will get worse before it gets better...protegt yourself and loved ones before you get it!

Sorry to hear that you've gotten West Nile. I've seen it smattered all over the news in the past six weeks from Twin Falls to Idaho Falls.

Our other resident nemesis is The Hobo Spider. If it bites you there are certain cases that can be fatal.

Hope you get to feeling better soon.

you cannot be treated for west nile ! you have to pray and hope that your immune system can recover! the older you are the chances are of serious problems or even death! most people dont get to affected sreiously but 20% do get ill and 1 out of 150 get it bad I have studied it very carefully from cdc website and talking to others who caught it. but once you recover from it you will never get it again...like chicken pox!

From the CDC website:
Q. How is West Nile encephalitis treated?
A. There is no specific treatment for West Nile virus infection. In more severe cases, intensive supportive therapy is indicated, often involving hospitalization, intravenous fluids, airway management, respiratory support (ventilator), prevention of secondary infections (pneumonia, urinary tract, etc.), and good nursing care.

I knew somebody who got West Nile. He said it kicked his butt. He said it felt like a severe case of the flu but fortunately in his case he didn't have to be hospitalized.

Geese, that is really sad.

What does your doctor say your chances are, or does one wait to see what happens?

Default West Nile

west nile can't be transmitted from person to person.

The normal path of transmission is from bird to bird by means of mosquito. Horses and people are "deadend hosts". It stops there.
I am a pest control guy, now licenced for mosquitoes! When I took the test at the Ag department, the guy giving the test tested positve for west nile he said. He was pretty sick I guess. It is still a threat for a little while longer this year, good luck y-all.

Can a bird transmit to other creatures, say perhaps a cat?

Default Wnv

You won't get WNV directly from a bird, but a mosquito that has had a blood meal from an infected bird or horse. Never heard of a cat getting it. You wont get it from eggs either, such as infected chickens.
I think worst case would be a bird with west nile and the avian flu at the same time....run away!!!
