I may be relocating to Pocatello this summer/fall with my fiance so I can attend graduate school at ISU. Our homes are both in Vancouver, WA, in areas we both feel are quite safe. I, however, attend school at the University of Washington, and if anyone knows Seattle, you know the U-district is not safe.

With all of that being said... we would really like to know what Pocatello is like safety-wise, with crime and everything. Is it the kind of place you feel pretty care-free taking an evening stroll? Or do you feel like once darkness falls you shouldn't leave the house alone (UW in a nutshell)? What are some of the safer, better areas to live in? I would be willing to commute up to 20 minutes, maybe 30, to get to school at ISU every day.

Thanks for any advice!

Pocatello is VERY safe. Stupid safe. So freeking safe that people let their guards down so far that they leave themselves open to crime when they travel outside of the area. The west side of town has a lot of renters and a slightly higher crime level but nothing serious. Honestly, you could leave your laptop, phone and baby alone in a public place (like ISU) for hours and come back to everything still there, except someone might have baked you some banana bread or something. There is quite a bit of domestic violence here, but I suppose you would not be affected by it. Welcome to Idaho and good luck in school.
