Yeah, I got the impression from the stats that part of the reason we are among the least hated, is because we are one of the least thought about. You have to think about something to hate it. People know a lot about California, Florida, New York, even if they've never been there. The only people who know much about Idaho are those who've either been here or have family here. Idaho just stays mostly off the radar, at least for the last 30 years or so.

We weren't among the most loved, we were sort of among the most forgotten, which is just fine with me.

I recall when I first joined CDF in Jan 2007 (I was building here on our acreage at the time) I was a vocal defender of my new home state. Over time I've come to realize that the more people who think Idaho is a bunch of backward scary rednecks, with cougars and wolves prowling our woods for human prey, and gloomy arctic weather, the better...I'd like to be a modern day "Iceland" among relocation choices. "No...don't come here...it's cold and awful..."

I didn't realize it said Idaho was the "least hated state". My original post I thought it was the "most hated".. Sorry, you can disregard my previous post then..

Me too. I agree with you that Idaho is just not on most people's radar (unless maybe they are LEO in southern CA ). When I am back east, and it's mentioned that I'm from Idaho, people just look kind of perplexed, like I should be a potato or something, because surely, that's all that's in Idaho.

Except for, oh yeah!...Bruce Willis and Demi Moore lived there too, huh?

Bruce Willis's head is shaped a teensy bit like a potato though so maybe there is a connection.

It's even worse--they think you're saying you're from Iowa...

I LOVED ID and HOPE it stays off the radar!! I may some day end up back there, who knows. Where we were we had the national forest and wilderness in our back yard litterly. Who can ask for more? Just keep it the way it is...

Unfortunately, while it's mostly off-the-radar for people in the East, those west of the Rockies are quite aware of the state. Arizona and Colorado have been going through a population boom for the last few decades, Utah started to pick up afterward, and since the late 90s Wyoming has become something of an oasis for those looking to build wealthy houses on lots of land. Montana and Idaho too are being sought by wealthy Californians (like Bruce Willis and Demi Moore had) looking for open spaces, it will continue to see modest growth by those wanting to leave more densely settled areas of the West.

If so many come, it will lose its reclusive identity, but what are the ethics of "I came here because it was quiet and peaceful, the rest of you stay put or you'll ruin it!"? I'm sure the Shoshone and Nez Perce were having something of the same conversation 150 years ago Smart zoning, compact urban living where possible and investing in land trusts to purchase and protect open spaces from too much development, so that they can still be used for hiking, hunting, grazing or farming, seem the wisest choice forward, but it's costly.

Idaho also has been going through a population boom the past few decades, and has been one of the fastest growing states. We have already been discovered for better or worse, whatever a person's opinion is on the subject. Thankfully we are not as populated as other western states.

Idaho which is one of the most beautiful of the states, definitely amongst the western states can be challenging to remain as a secret. People step out of their naive boxes and realize Idaho is not just potatoes and then they visit and find paradise.
