Park City is a nice town which I am familier with because some family used to live there until last year before relocating for similar employment in Sun Valley, but I would not recommend it over the two cities which are the topic of this thread. Coeur d'Alene is far superior to Park City regarding scenery and outdoor recreation and location. Boise, obviously because of size and location, offers a lot more than Park City in all questions being asked and PC's nearby city, SLC isn't one of my top choices for a larger city either, I prefer Boise.

The religious dominance of the LDS church, both socially and politically is much less noted in North Idaho and the Boise area as compared to anywhere in Utah. Again, PC is nice, has the easy in town access to snow skiing, but does not stack up to either CD'A or Boise.

And Park City isn't what I would consider to be affordable. When I looked at Rental Homes there, it was crazy. And I am in Charleston, SC, a place that has pretty high housing costs.
Rentals, land, and homes I have found to be very reasonable in the CDA & Boise areas.

Totally agree on the housing costs. Our next door neighbor just moved here from Columbia, SC, and said the same. The religion piece is wide and deep, and I won't touch it, other than to say we are not of the predominant faith in Utah and very happy in Park City. One of our best friends is opening a new Presbyterian church, and is from Alabama, no where near Utah! We just like skiing, 7 days a week if we can! PC is probably better to compare to Sun Valley, Breck, Aspen, Incline Village, etc.
Good points on CDA from TohobitPeak; I want to go visit it sometime soon.

Columbia SC housing is fairly inexpensive. In the Charleston area though you pay a premium for being close to the beaches.
I am sure PC is nice and I probably wouldn't notice or be bothered by any religious group. It just raised an eyebrow with all the talk of it.
My ideal place is obviously one with mountain views and scenery. I want to be with in a 1/2 hour or so drive to snow skiing, same or closer to a nice lake, with jogging and biking trails within walking or a short drive. Want to have access to shopping etc in that same 1/2 hour window, but don't need to be right in the mix. 3-5 acres and I'm
in heaven!

It is truly an undertaking when you make a big move, especially when you have kids! So much to research and consider! My son is only 9, but he is one of the top wrestlers for his age and weight in the country. That could change at anytime, but I don't want it to change because I put somewhere that he didn't have access to the same level of training.

Bottom line there is no perfect place, but the CDA area has certainly tugged at me!

If you want your family to learn to ski/board, Bogus has a great deal for first years of any age. Four comprehensive lessons, a season pass and a one year gear package lease for $200. I did it years ago and never looked back..Bogus is a short enough drive I go 2-3 times a week in the winter. Snow levels were a problem this year though.

I would suggest that you visit both, and not move until you have spent time in both areas. I am in Boise, and I highly recommend that you see what this area and CDA both have to offer. The surrounding areas of the Treasure Valley have plenty of outdoors with easy access to the mountains, and I believe you will find that there is enough recreation here. I prefer milder winters, and if I want to go to where there's more snow, it wont take long to get there. You should find a lot of links and additional information regarding Boise and CDA, and that will also help you with your research. Good luck.

I plan to see both places. Boise is still right there as it is basically Boise or the CDA/Sandpoint area. There is probably a lean to North Idaho right now because it looks like it is a little easier to get a few acres out there and still be close enough to everything you need. Boise is so much bigger I haven't been able to find to this point somewhere on the outskirts of Boise where I can get a few acres(Without going broke) yet still be in a nice area, good schools, and easy commute to the amenities of Boise.

Have you looked in the area of Kuna, it is SE of Boise and still keeps you near to the amenities of the city.

Hi SCescape
I've been reading the last few posts and wondered if your decision has changed in the past couple weeks or have visited ID. My wife and I are just about fed up with Calif. (sorry ID residents, yes another cali lookiloo. But we come in peace.) I also have zeroed in on N.Idaho and CDA looks like the weather and scenery we're after. We like the colder, cloudy days in a secluded spread of at least 5 acres in a woodsy, sort of secluded area.
I'm also a researcher on just about anything I look into. My wife and I are 60 and don't want to wait too much longer to make the move. My main concern is another 7 years of job opportunities. I would guess Spokane is closer for that and I don't mind the commute. I drive 80 mi. round trip now and my wife is unemployed. I don't intend to rob your thread here just curious if your decision is unchanged.

Hi SCescape,
I am curious if you made the trip to ID yet. We are also from CA (actually just up the freeway from 3PuttBob), and are contemplating a move to either CDA or Boise. But, we promise Idahoans, we come in peace! :-) We are also fed up with CA, and are looking to raise our kids in a safe community with good public schools and a down-to-earth, friendly group of people. We also tend to have conservative beliefs. All of which seem to be satisfied by the culture ID has to offer. I LOVE greenery (which would be more satisfied by CDA). Yet I also don't like living in heavy snow (I would rather visit it), I can't stand humidity, and employment is a big consideration (all of which would be more satisfied by Boise). It seems that Boise gets 4 definite seasons, and coming from the dry, dusty high-desert of CA, it seems that the Boise area is a bit greener than what we are used to.

All-in-all, I am curious what your experience was between the 2 cities. We will be visiting both next summer, but my curiosity is killing me! :-)
