Exclamation What can you tell me about Lewiston Idaho?

We may possibly be relocationg to Lewiston Idaho from Oregon on the coast. There are several other places in different states we may be relocationg to...its all up in the air right now. But this is ONE of the places. I need to know as much as possible about this area.

School, shopping (of any kind) crime rates, community, neighborhoods, cost of living, what is the tax rate (in Oregon we don't have sales tax!) whould you reccomend another town that is better that is close by Lewiston? How much are houses (3+bd) renting for...we currently rent a 3bd 1ba split level for $700mo. what kind of recreation is there, parks...all that kind of stuff that you would want to know if you were relocating to a new state, we have 4 girls 13,11,2 and 4mos. I need to know everything! any and all info you can give me is greatly appreciated! thanks so much!

I live about 75 miles out of Lewiston and run there for major shopping. Best thing to do is go online to Lewiston Tribune paper and look at the classifieds, crime reports etc. The climate is great. It has a junior college LCSC which has a good reputation. Over all not a bad city. Oh the major hospital St Josephs is a great place too.

All I can say... why in god's name would you leave the Oregon coast for LEWISTON?
I mean, Lewiston has some nice attributes. But there really isn't a comparison. Stay where you are or you will probably regret it!

belive me i DO NOT want to move i absolutly LOVE it here!! we are going to have to move for my husbands work, he works for a payday loan company and because of new lawas that were passed in july this year they are having to close down ALL the centers in Oregon. there are a couple differnet states that we could possibly move to and we are waiting to hear back from the company if my husband gets a promotion he put in for that would take us all the way to Ohio! but this is another one of our options so i need to get as much info as possible.

Peaches,
I have lived in both Moscow and Lewiston and I grew up about an hour from the Oregon coast so I hope I'll be able to provide some useful information. Moscow is a college town much like a smaller Corvallis. For shopping Moscow has Macy's, Old Navy, Bed Bath & Beyond, Winco, and others. Recreation revolves mostly around the two universities. WSU (8 miles away) usually brings in good comedy acts (such as Bill Cosby). I really enjoyed my time in Moscow. I went to college there for 3 years and lived there for 2 years following school.

Lewiston is a great place for outdoor recreation. The Snake and Clearwater rivers are great for fishing. The snake is also great for boating and water sports such as water skiing. Lewiston isn't too far from a lot of snowmobiling during the wintertime. Shopping in Lewiston there is a Home Depot, Pier 1, Eddy Bauer, and others. Lewiston has a good airport with 2 flights/day to Boise, 2 flights/day to Salt Lake City, and 5 flights/day to Seattle.

The people in both towns are great. Coming from the Oregon coast Lewiston might be too brown for you, but it does offer year round golf. Moscow receives more snow during the winter. Lewiston has a reputation for odor, but that is mainly because of where the through highways are located. I live in the orchards and never smell the paper mill or the composting facility. Most residences are located in odor free areas. I really would suggest looking at both towns in person as well as Pullman and Clarkston.

The Orchards are a part of Lewiston. This website describes the neighborhoods in Lewiston and Clarkston. I found it useful when we were house shopping.
Lewiston Idaho Real Estate § Neighborhoods

As for finding a place to rent go to Lewiston Tribune Online and click on classifieds (near the top). I don't know much about rental prices and options. When looking at the classifieds be sure to know which town the rental is located in because there will be listings for more cities than just Lewiston. Air conditioning is a must have over here during summers.

Clarkston (right across the river from Lewiston) is where the Costco and future Super Walmart are located. Lewiston has a Wal Mart as well.

Good luck with everything. Moving can be a lot of hard work. I hope you and your family will enjoy the area as much as my wife and I do. If you have any additional questions post them and I'll attempt to provide information.

I've taken motorcycle trips all over Eastern OR/WA and ID. Moscow is a very picturesque town compared to Clarkston/Lewiston. My friend's sister lives in Clarkston rather than Lewiston due to the lower cost of housing and property taxes although there's a bit more crime.

As another poster said, Lewiston/Clarkston are too brown compared to the coast, but take a look at Asotin which is 6 miles south south via Hwy 129 of Clarkston by Hells Gate State Park.
