I'm researching potential costs associated with well drilling and was curious if anyone here on the forum has had a well drilled in the last several years. How deep was the well and what was the rough cost for the whole project? Potential problems? County regs? This would be for areas outside any city limits.

We're in Sagle in the west Dufort Valley (between Hwy 95 and the river) in a relatively flat area but our house is on a slight rise. We hit 14gpm at 120' depth, and hit an artesian spring so we have an overflow pipe that trickle-falls into a pond at about 2gpm.

I want to say we spent around $6000 or $6500. We used Bronson Water Wells of Spirit Lake, (208) 437-4132. But drilling a well can vary since you really do take your chances on hitting water at depth. We had a good witching guy that found a good drilling spot...and all the cedars on our property I guess also meant the presence of good ground water.

For our pressure pump and such we used Panhandle Pump & Irrigation (208) 263-7867. I don't recall their fees, sorry.

IIRC the only permit we had to do related to water was when we did our septic. Panhandle Health (208) 265-6384

Thanks for the info Sage. One or two hundred feet sounds pretty good to us, considering where we live now, we had to go down to 492 feet. Do you file for water rights after the well is put in?

120'? I was under the impression that the water table was higher.

Molly-

The water table varies greatly depending upon where you are in the county. In the Selle Valley, for example, many folks still have sand point wells, which are quite shallow.

I've heard of people on rocky benches having to go down pretty deep, but nobody I know personally has had that issue. We're slightly elevated in this valley. As you go west toward the river you drop 70-80' to the level of the Pend Oreille River.

Here's water rights info: Idaho Department of Water Resources

Since we're not diverting public water or using ground water for irrigation, and our well is a new well on a property that has had the old well on it for 40+ years, we did not see the need to make a water rights application.

Call Minden out of Moyie Springs/Bonners Ferry--they serve both Bonner and Boundary. Good people.

we used sweetwater drilling. i wouldn't recommend them. as mentioned it varies greatly. one huge expense is that steel casing is required in idaho so that brings cost up significantly. call around. you can get online and see all wells drilled in idaho since 1980 something. its a great resource. i'll try to post link later.
