In NID it is like 6% and Spokane closer to 9%, but ID has tax on food and WA does not. Missoula has 0%.

Once again, a reminder that Washington State has no state income tax. This is good for those who are depending on Social Security for a big part of their retirement. Simple financial facts.

BTW, the grocery tax is gradually being phased out in Idaho. Though I doubt it will ever go away completely.

For those buying big ticket items, WA is not a good place to do so. However, they will hunt you down if you provide a false address. Over the past decades, WA residents who try to buy a car in Oregon, for example, and saying they are Oregonians, have been caught and fined. It isn't something to play around with.

It is my understanding that Idaho does not tax social security.

Wasn't aware of that. Can you provide a source? Not a challenge, just out of curiousity. Idaho taxes income, and SS is income. Is there an exemption for this?

Here's your source, the state of Idaho:

FAQ Search Results : Idaho State Tax Commission

In the Seattle area it's close to 10% sales tax. People in the southwest part of the state, and even people here at times will combine a trip to Portland with shopping. Other than vehicles, there is no way for the state to tax us on purchases in Oregon, so on things like appliances and Jewelry we can save the 10%.

Did my own research on this, and the number of income tax states that exempt SS is quite large.

States That Exempt Social Security - States That Do Not Tax Social Security

Awesome! As a disabled, retired Civil Service employee, this can be a good thing. I wonder though, it stipulates disabled AND 62 and I'm only 43. I'm not sure why I would have to be 62 AND disabled, I would think that disabled and unable to work would suffice in not having my disability income taxed. I guess I'll find out when I move there.
