The best dining in Boise is not the chains, but the ample number of locally ran restaurants. There are great creative delis too, some opened by people who moved here to Boise from other countries.
There are no Sizzlers anywhere near downtown!
So when you mentioned Idaho, did you leave the Falls off or are you referring to the state as a whole? Boise, Sun Valley, and Coeur d' Alene most likely are a world apart from the rest of the state when you take restaruants and variety into consideration.

I was referring to Idaho Falls, where I unfortunetly live, because thats where Rykerbrown was thinking of putting his restaurant at. I only wish I had moved to Boise instead of I.F., for maybe I wouldnt have such a bitter taste in my mouth for Idaho. Ah well, you live and learn. Back to Ca, where I belong

There are a lot of our California brothers and sisters who have moved to Boise. This valley is similar to the more idyllic valleys in California with our mountains, rivers, and vineyards, and fruit orchard regions. There are even some vineyards in the foothills above downtown, and Eagle has designated itself as an official winery city. I didn't know that Idaho is one of the largest Cherry producing states in the nation until I moved here. Makes for a great afternoon drive in the spring when the orchards are in bloom, or later in summer when the fruits are being harvested.
Question out of curiosity, do Idaho Falls restaurants promote Idaho grown produce and meat and Idaho wine as much as Boise does?

I'm not sure about that. I've only lived here for 6 months, but I'll tell you one thing, the produce and meat here in I.F. is nothing compared to Ca's meat and produce. It just doesn't taste fresh. In fact, nothing tastes good here. I'm sure Boise is different, but I sure can't wait to get back to Ca and taste some real good food.

While living in Boise, I didn't find the produce in Boise to be superior to that in California, although there was a different variety, of course. As for the scenic beauty of Boise, the foothill area is pretty, especially when snow-covered; but you really can't compare the foothills of Boise with the majestic mountains you see in California. They're so different.

Leatherby's Is Open in Idaho Falls
[quote=cleosmom;2423559]You said a mouthful there, regarding location. Did you notice how long Leatherby's Ice Cream didn't last? Didn't help they placed themselves. QUOTE]
Slightly off topic here, but Leatherby's isn't closed. I believe it's possible the owner may have replaced the staff as positions are still open. But, the store is open. I don't know what happened that it wasn't clear to all that it is open. Whether or not the Idaho Falls Leatherby's ever got fully staffed, or not, or what types of challenges the restaurant has had to face or not, is something I don't know. Others here may.
I'd encourage anyone who hasn't tried a Leatherby's to try it. Their lunch specials, in some ways, are similar to Babe's, without the extensive baked goodies Babes offers. I've always had great lunches at the Leatherby's where I've eaten previously.
Leatherby's use to cater a lot to the lunch crowd with special soups, sandiwches in many restaurants etc. Of course, specialty ice cream orders are the highlight any time they are open. But, they provide lunch/dinner, not only ice cream related treats.
I know everytime I've been in to Cold Stone it is so packed there isn't room to walk. I'd encourage everyone at least to try Leatherby's once, or search for a online menu some of their store in UT and CA, I think, have posted. It gives you a better idea of Leatherby's diversity compared to strictly an Ice Cream Store.

You're correct MSR, someone mentioned it'd been reopened before I left town and sure enough it has. See, I've never been so I wasn't aware they served anything other than ice cream, thanks for the head's up

Certainly, cleosmom. Glad to see you are back!
I don't want to confuse Leatherby's with the other restaurants mentioned in this thread. And when Rutabaga's, Snake Bite and a few others we've failed to mention are getting reviews elsewhere as top notch, I have to reconsider all that is available.
I'm afraid I fall into the same habit, of driving regardless where I am. I usually have deadlines and don't take the time to explore some of those establishments. The one time I ate at Rutabaga's, I was very surprised what an International menu and the service. That isn't to say other businesses aren't comparable or better. I'm simply saying I get use to how I travel and forget about where the city is growing certain districts and amenties.
One thing is for sure, with the new Hilton Garden Inn opening next month and now that the Marriott Residence Inn is actually going to the P and Z for permits for the 5-6 story hotel, when McNeil builds the 13 story Condo building on the Snake River, I suspect all the restuarants mentioned here will be busy.

Are you kidding me. I would never pay that much for any kind of food. I don't care what it is.
There is no way something like that would last more than a month here.

I'd love to work with you when you do open
I will be moving to the IF area this summer. I am a fine dining server in Marin County. Let me know where to forward my resume if you do open!
