I believe that is true. I know it is more expensive to live in Sandpoint than CDA and they are only an hour away. It cost us more in Clark Fork than Sandpoint with higher energy costs and more gas. If you were to buy food from the teeny grocery store in Clark Fork you would really be spending a lot more.

I would agree. As brokencrayola points out, it has to do with a series of economic issues including transportation costs (distances rural folks must travel for various services) and the higher costs for food and supplies in smaller local stores.

Incidentally, in their Cost of Living Index for 2013, the Council for Community and Economic Research reports that Idaho is the 3rd cheapest State to live in behind Tennessee and Oklahoma. A colorful breakdown of the 10 cheapest States can be found at:
